I want to improve the sound of the CD/stereo that came in my 2000 F250 crew cab Lariat, but I don't want to change out the main unit. I was thinking the stock speakers are probably pretty cheap units and replacing them with good aftermarket ones and possibly adding a power amp would boost the sound level and not be too pricey.
Anyone done this or got suggestions? Does the stock unit have a pre-amp out circuit? I am not looking for any competition hi-fi set up, just something to keep up with the Powerstroke.
I replaced my door speakers with pioneer plate speaker, and put a bazooka bass tube behind the rear seat, it had a built in amp. the truck sound preatty good now!
Thanks for the reply guys, this is very helpful. For the Bazooka, which I understand has its own amp, where did you get the power feed from (I presume it wants to be switched from the radio)? And where did you take the music source from, the rear speakers?
the bazooka was a very simple install, first i ran a constant hot wire from the battery with a fuse, then a ground witch i got from the rear seat bolts. last tap into your rear speakers, the bazooka has a sensor on it. when it detect sound from the speaker wires it auto turns itself on. the 6 inch tube fits perfect in the rear cargo tray and has pleanty of low bass. if you remove the cargo tray you could fit the 8" tube.
Don't forget if you want to add a 6 disk changer you can plug one in the back of the radio. Sometimes they will be on EBAY. There is a site that sells these changers. I don't have that info with me, I may be able to find it later.
i did this on my first sound upgrade..... added a five channel amp, four new speakers, and a sub..... decided later to go to a new hu, another amp, another sub, and a couple of caps.... yes i can tell a difference in the second itteration, but was it that mch better than the first.... for the money i spent, probably not....
stock: cd changer, stock speakers
first upgrade: infinity speakers, rf sub, 5 channel rf amp (pushing 1000+ watts)
second upgrade: another rf sub, pioneer hu, class d amp (pushing 2200+ watts)
i will probably do an upgrade again getting rid of the front and rear speakers and replacing with a front set of seperates and bridging the amp to bring lots of wattage to them.
I replaced my system with alpine CDA-7897 deck spr574a speakers
mrv-f340 amp for doors and back speakers / mrp-t220 Amp for the JLAudio sub also have the CHA 1214 CD changer
I went to Magnolia Hi-Fi and heard a pair of diamond separates. $525.00 for a pair, but man is the sound incredible, clear, crisp, and good low range. Can't afford them now, but Im waiting till I can. I imagine though they will need an external amp to give them enough power to really here the clarity.
