Quick question for you 3.0 buffs. I recently found that my vacuum tree had spit off quite a few lines, and upon replacing them many pf my problems went away. The only problem I have (well, my wife has, I don't care) is now that everything works how it is supposed to, it seems to be louder than before it started acting up, and it's only louder under heavy (3/4 throttle & up) acceleration. I would normally say muffler, but the noise from the engine bay is what has increased, not the noise out of the tailpipe. I think it sounds better, but for my sanity sake, is there anything that would start to go at 10 years old and 120k that would make this happen?
you say it happens when 3/4 throttle & up, that will be a hell of a lot of air the engine will be sucking up, and, if your air filter has been in the van for while and doesn't have good flow, air would have entered the manifold through that path of least resistance, albeit small; the vacuum tree...
The way the doghouse is so well sound insulated and with this unusual air intake routing it is conceivable you may hear less noise from the cabin?
you are lucky you plugged the leaks, unfiltered air with dirt is bad... may I suggest an early oil change now would be a good idea to flush away any unfiltered particles that may have been sucked up into the engine...
have you checked the hose at the oil filler neck is properly hooked up the air filter assembly? my van was noisy when I once discovered this unhooked...
You could also check to see if the van had a previous owner that would have removed the silencer tube on the front of the air filter assembly? with the leaks plugged up, all air would be coming through the air box with the missing silencer+ you could only really tell when you rev it up quite high as you described...
along those same line, i noticed mine was louder, when i checked the air filter box, it was slightly askew, allowing more direct air in. the engine sounded louder under more throttle. problem solved after i put the filter box back together correctly. rick
