Interior Help

Just wondering what the little ****/push button thing is on the driver side floor board?
Thank you

The high beam switch. You are obviously quite young.

First thing you should buy and read is an Owner's Manual.... eBay generally has them for cheap...

1981 was a good year for Ford trucks. Had the swiss cheese frame and, as someone else said, the "last great grille".

When the manufacturers moved the high beam switch to the turn signal stalk it really screwed me up, kept getting my foot caught in the steering wheel. Really bad move on their part.

Lol! I know what you mean, as I had that problem when they moved the starter switch from the floor to the dash. Had to take my shoe off to turn the ignition switch.

Does anyone know why all the car manufacturers did that? I think it is much more convenient to have the dimmer switch on the floor.

Even worse, the simple "pull-on/push off" headlight **** is gone from all models now. That function is also now on one of the steering wheel stalks. Now that is quite aggravating to figure out in the dark when you are not used to the vehicle you are in.

When relays started being used for everything and/or front wheel drive became standard are a couple reasons that sort of make sense. Apparently even the horn is on the stalk in some cars?

One downside to the "Christmas Tree" phenomenon of the steering column is they have crammed quite a lot of stuff in there (plus airbag), and the tilt feature puts a lot of flex on wiring bundles to cause intermittents. Can't imagine they are too fun to work on either.

I also think the button on the floor is lots more convenient, I assume they moved it to the stalk because lots of foreign cars had it there in the 70s and 80s and the American manufacturers needed to compete and also have a "that's cool" factor - they also needed to increase their quality, many foreign cars were built lots better than American cars during that time.

And, yes, every time I drive my mom's car, I have to figure out how to turn on the dang headlights and wipers and defrosters and all that other stuff - at least the radio still has ***** (although I have no idea what the RH **** does).

The columns Ford Australia used in the 80's have the horn on the indicator stalk, hence my F100 has that.

That would be cool to do to one of our trucks! That plus a starter button on the floor under the clutch pedal would freak everyone out.

Hmmm? What I like so much about our trucks is the simplicity.

Today, everyone wants automatic transmissions, keyless starting, foot activated rear tailgates, assisted parking, remote starting and now, driverless vehicles!

I believe the 79 Mustang was one of the first Fords with the horn on the stalk. The floor dimmer is great, I always rest my foot against it, just in case it's needed.
