Brake troubles

Having a little bit of trouble with my rear brakes on the F100. The adjuster arm is not engaging on the star wheel, and I think the brakes are backing off because of it. I've taking them apart and made sure everything is how it is supposed to be. and everything is as how it is shown in the Chiltons manual. So I'm not sure what's wrong.

Any insight? They work great otherwise

I can't imagine how the arm isn't touching the star wheel. Did you snap any pics?

I did my rear brakes on my 250, and the adjuster star would not engage, then a knowrest the adjuster screw was backwards, I turned it around and it engaged the arm and all was good. hope this helps.

I don't have pictures. And I already put it all back together so...

All the springs and hardware are correctly installed. The adjuster arm just is not holding the star wheel. It sits off of it a little. I thought it was supposed to be engaged all the time to keep the star from backing off.

If that small cable is stretched the lever might be kinda past the star wheel. Or if it's the wrong (aftermarket) cable it might be too short. The Ford number on the lever and cable kit was C8TZ2A176F. Discontinued but there are a bunch of them out of state.

I think the geometry is about right. But it sits out towards the drum.

I was thinking, and maybe if I flipped the bottom spring around to the inside of the shoe, it might pull the arm over a bit?

What you are describing is exactly the same situation I had, switch the adjuster screw end to end and the star should engage the adjuster arm, keeping it from turning loose.

This close? Everything should be nice and taut, the lever arm prevents the star wheel from loosening. Let us know what you find.

That is exactly how it is. But the arm is sitting OUT towards the drum away from the backing plate, and not engaging the star wheel.

I don't see how flipping the adjusters end-end would change anything, except they would be backwards and not right. Then it really wouldn't even have a chance of working.

Well there are right and left hand adjuster levers too, as well as right and left hand star adjuster links. Note that the illustration shows a left hand (drivers) side brake assembly. Something isn't seated fully, maybe backing plate is bent, or there is a wrong part installed etc.

The adjuster lever always fits in one of the teeth or just south of it anyway at the center line. When the brakes are applied backing up, and there is a bit of wear on the linings the lever gets pulled up and when the brakes are released the spring tension pulls the lever back down and the star adjuster is moved one (1) click in the tightening direction. It has to have contact with the adjuster at all times to work correctly and keep the brake adjuster from loosening as well

^Right, and that's what isn't happening. The stars arnt being engaged and are slowly backing off because of it. It's annoying as heck.

1964/67 F100's use a different cable (2A178) and levers (2A176/2A177) than 1968/79 F100 & 1975/79 F150.
