P/S Problem Help

I havent done much investigating yet but my power steering is acting weird. When i turn it starts, then sticks (As if steering was manual), then goes and then the same trying to straighten back. Could my belt be slipping on the pump? I checked the fluid levels and they are good and havent heard any belt noises but im just trying to think it through.

I had an issue with a P/S gearbox once. It was acting in this manner as well. Come to find out someone tried to adjust the play in it, via the nut and set screw on the top side, of what I should tell you was a Saginaw P/S gearbox. So when I was having problems, I read a lot about this and this can be very dangerous, meaning driving down the road, go to turn and the gearbox locks up....in the ditch you go. Not sure but wanted to mention it. I replaced the gearbox!

No P/S was available in 1965.

BENDIX P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD - 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001.

FORD/SAGINAW P/S: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001 - 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350.

Bendix & Saginaw: Do NOT mess with the nut on the sector shaft cover, as it only sets the pre-load for the sector shaft.

Over tighten it, the box could lock up. Backing it off when this occurs may not unlock it.

Serial number is the last 6 digits of the VIN .. It's the numerical sequence of assembly, which decodes to the month/year the truck was assembled.

Jeff, Raise the front wheels off the ground, turn the steering wheel coast to coast about 20 times. Let it down check the fluid, and take it around the block to see if it made any difference. This will bleed air from the system, and doesn't cost you a penny.
