I am doing a complete restore. Starting with the frame and engine. I decided to go with a 351w because thats what my dad had in it when it still ran. I already have the engine and I am slowly putting it together as I have time. I hope to have the engine installed this weekend. With any luck she will be drive able as well. Paint and interior will most likely have to wait until next year.
Right on, glad to hear she's going back to how she was! Ill be watching this thread man
I'm really curious to see how the headers fit in the truck. And the engine mounts are so far back on the crossmember, I can't believe the engine will clear the firewall. Is that how the 351W was mounted before?
Yes that is how the 351w was mounted before. The headers will not fit with out some kind of modification. The headers are hitting the frame and front transmission cross member. I think the headers will clear the starter with slight frame mod. but not sure if there is away to modify the cross member. I will be looking for shorty headers and or a cross member modification.
Those are the same problems I had trying to fit headers. And it appears you're using the 6 cylinder or FE frame mounts so it looks like your motor is set further back, but it's really not. MIne was originally a 6 cylinder and had those mounts. I switched to 302 mounts and had to experiment to get the location right. They make it easier to clear the PS gearbox too.
I think I'm just gonna use shorty headers. That way I won't have to modify the crossmember.
What do you plan on doing with the gas tank? are you going to relocate it and swap it out for one that will go behind the rear axle or are you going to do leave it in the cab? I have a 68 f250 and I really want to move mine but I'm having trouble on how to go about it.
LIQUID8, look into getting a starter off of a 93-97 f-150 with a 302 or 351w. The starter will be a small high torque starter. You will lose weight and gain space, here is a link to some info. There are many threads on it. I picked one up when I went to 64-73 mustang big tube long tube headers in my 74 f100. I got mine from the local 'yard for $42.
I mean you can get them from other vehicles, but the trucks may be more readily available. Good luck, hope it helps.
Been super busy with work lately but here are some of the most recent picture. We did manager to get her running again. Still need a little carb and wiring work.
It's been awhile since I posted new pictures. Ole blue has come along way. A little over a year since I got her running. She is now my daily drive. I recently add the edelebrock performer power package to the engine. Runs like a champ. Also picked up a new set of wheels and tires.
