A slight wrinkle in that schematic. It shows a newer style setup where the ignition switch sends the coil full voltage during start. Whereas our trucks that full voltage comes from the Starter Solenoid/Relay I terminal.
Good eye, I wasn't sure if it were the newer or older honestly.. Thanks for the info
Rubbing salt but here is a visual difference in the ignition setups
Yes, there is an external wiring harness in the Duraspark system. This gets the electronics out of the way of all the high-voltage arcs, etc. that are going on inside the distributor cap, which from an engineering perspective is a very good thing.
I don't dispute that HEI systems have fewer external wires.
I don't dispute that they can work reliably.
I just don't think that the solution to every problem that touches on the ignition system is to rip it all out and replace it with a big ol' honkin' GM system instead. (In this case, of course, it may be easier than figuring out WTF the PO did with the wiring if he doesn't care about originality, though I'd be kind of afraid not to re-do all the wiring at this point anyway.)
Actually, if he truly has a points-based system right now, a Pertronix system may not be a bad approach either. Also simple to install, but lets you re-use the existing distributor & coil.

These are generally the only times I or preach to just pitch the original setup.. Dad has had a 79f100 for nearly 10 years with NO duraspark trouble at all so I know they are excellent systems!
Ehh, I admit I enjoy rubbing salt every now and then
