Sometimes I have no signal or brake lights and the gauges on the instrument cluster do not work. I have discovered that if I shut the motor off and restart the lights will then work but not everytime. Sometimes I have to start the truck 3-6 times before everything works. I am thinking this is an ignition switch problem. Any other possibilities?
The lights should be on constant power; the ignition switch shouldn't be in the picture there. I'd check your fusible links up under the hood near the starter solenoid, as well as the battery cables (esp. ground).
I always have headlights, taillights and instrument lights. If I just turn on the ignition the signal lights and gauges work but when I switch the key further to start the truck that is when the signal lights, brake light and gauges often do not work. This is why I am thinking the ignition switch is bad.
Ah, OK, I misunderstood what wasn't working ... brake lights confuse me though, as those should (like headlights) have constant power. Turn signals and gauges though, does sound like an ignition switch issue if they're not working in "run" ... if they're just not working while cranking, that's normal.
If there's an issue in "run" then I'm not sure why the engine wouldn't also die though; trying to remember how many terminals are on the back of that thing. Wonder if it could be an issue with the wiring at the switch rather than the switch itself.
Its likely the connection in the tumbler not reconnecting "ACC ON" when you let off of "crank".. Replace the entire tumbler.. should cost around 10 bucks
I replaced the tumbler ($8.95) and all is now well!
At the parts store the guy was a little pushy about contacting someone he recommended to have them change the door locks to match the new tumbler ($20 or so...). I asked why I didn't just swap the pins from the old ignition tumbler to the new one. He said, "because the old pins are worn" I said "so is the key". Decided to just walk away at that point, before I installed the new tumbler I swapped the pins...
