Question Running cold?

I've owned an 1981 Bronco custom for a year now and was wondering how warm the engine is supposed to be in refference to the stock temp gauge. The gauge works good but even in 90 degree weather the gauge never goes past n in the "NORMAL" zone. The gauge works because I notice the changes when contitions change. The warmest i ever got it was on the R one very hot day not moving very fast but it usaully stays between N and the mark before it. I just put a new thermostat (195) in it also and it diddn't change anything. I would just like to know if my truck is running to cold and if it is than why. Thanks.

Running cold?

I think the normal operating temp. is 200-220 F.
I might be wrong.

Running cold?

My thermostat is also 195 and I tend to stay right around the middle of the normal range on warm days and on the "A" in Normal on hot days. I would suspect the temperature sensor. The shop manual has a test procedure for it.

Are you running a clutch fan? It could be that someone replaced the clutch fan with a unit that spins all the time. If that's the case, it would cause you to run cool as well.

Just some ideas....

Running cold?

That is pretty much the same on my truck. I have a 93 and it sets right on the O and sometimes moves as far as the R. They are just idiot gauges. When your temperature starts to move up you have a problem and better check things out. I noticed mine started to move off the R and I got out to check things and found that I had a freeze plug that was loose and leaking coolant. But to answer your question I think that is the normal position for the gauge for what you described.

Running cold?

Good thing I found this post. I was beginning to freak over this running colt thing... I have the exact deal happening and I just replaced the thermostat too. The stupid gauge sometimes suddenly shoots up and stays right in the middle and sometimes doesn't even make it to the Normal range for the whole day. I've inspected the entire cooling system, flushed it and everything seems to be fine, so I guess its just the gauge...
