Engine advice- Little spicy

Hey all

Just got a real clean 92 F150 E40d with a 5.0. I have a 1993 same tranny with a real nice 5.8 that I will swap in as my 5.0 has a wicked rod knock.

While the engine was out I was debating on throwing a set of headers to bolt up to the existing flowmaster pipe and muffler and possibly throwing in a very mild Competition Camshaft.

Is this worth my time and money? Just want a real nice sounding 5.8l with a bit more bottom end. I know I am not a MAF motor and some people are saying it will run very lean...... is this true? I'm not going for big HP numbers here.... Just want a bit of a "Wake up" Got a line on some Flowtech shorty headers, just need some advice on the camshaft and if doing this will indeed cause a lean run situation.

Use the Crane 444232 or Comp cams 35-255-5. If it's a lumpy idle you're looking for you can forget it, the stock SD EFI system needs a strong steady vacuum signal and that is exactly what you don't get with a lumpy cam. These cams are still upgrades over stock however so you will see nice gains.

That 5.8 isn't a roller motor, were you gonna use linkbar lifters?

An SD friendly roller cam is the Comp 35-512-8.

Is the swap for my 5.8 basically plug and play? Is there anything else I need to change over when I yank the 5.0 out? Again my 5.8 sits in a 93. The 5.0 is in a 92.

Sorry not trying to hi-jack the thread.

Id like to know if that is a fact. Because I want to do a 94-97 5.8L swap into my 92 with a 5.0 e4od. I thought you could just run the 5.0 computer with all the 5.0 electrical ect... Just use the 5.8 dizzy, exhaust, manifold, 28oz c6-e4od flexplate, and a 28oz harmonic balancer.

But for you, "if you all ready have a 5.8L with an e4od you could just swap the entire 5.8L with every thing on over." I think the 92-93 transmission pin outs are the same. I could be wrong. May be some one can correct me.

For a '93 5.8 that would be flat tappet lifters.. can't use those with a roller cam. And yes this is a pretty straight forward swap, the 5.8 will run on the 5.0 computer but it'll run better on the 5.8 computer, but that will plug right into the 5.0 harness so using it is no big issue.. no wiring needs to change. The only time it is 100% OK to use a 5.0 computer for a swap like this is when the truck is MAF.

Seems to me that most aftermarket cams increase lift and duration, producing more (peak) power at the top end. The lumpy idle is because the engine just doesn't run so well at idle. It also sacrifices bottom end power.

Put another way, most truck engines are developed for low end torque and smooth power delivery at the bottom end. A hot cam and freer exhaust sacrifices (some of) that low end torque to breath better and produce more power up top.

Youll need to use the 5.8 Y pipe too, the 5.0 one wont work with the 5.8.

Other than, swapping computers, its as easy as pulling one engine out, dropping the other in.

If you've never done this before, don't rip the engine wiring harness all apart, just follow it to the drivers side inner fender, to a square shaped connection, remove harness from that point on both trucks, simply plug the 5.8 harness in when you install engine.

Fuel pump was same across the board, be a good time to change the fuel filter.

Easy. Good luck.

Personal opinion, Id forget the cam, sure you want more power who doesn't but changing a cam wont unleash a beast, an it needs alot more love to be even remotely close to modern offerings. Its like I tell my nephews, put the best sounding exhaust on your truck, drive it slow, no one will know how fast it is, but they'll wonder.

Well SNAP!!! I bought the 35-255-5 camshaft and lifters listed...... turns out I have roller lifters.......

I am going to guess that my roller lifters wont work with this cam....

Engine is apart on the stand right now so I am ***** deep....

Any suggestions on a good roller cam?

That's the problem.... the 35-255-5 camshaft is a flat tappet camshaft.... I have a roller lifter engine. I must have read wrong as I had assumed from that post that I did NOT have a roller engine and therefore NEEDED a flat tappet camshaft..... I need a roller camshaft as my engine is roller otherwise I need to install longer pushrods and from what I read going back to a flat tappet is a step backwards.....

If your 5.8 was a '93 it would be a flat tappet so maybe it's a '94.
