Hey guys. I am heading out to San Diego next week to visit my son and our 64 Slick. It has a 262 and three on the tree. He says it doesn't want to idle below 900 or so rpm without wanting to stall. I am packing my timing light and he has tools. Our plan is to install a pertronic II ignition, set the timing (need to know what to set it at), check for vacuum leaks and possibly rebuild the carb. The best pic of the carb he could send looks to be a Holley model 1960. My questions are is this the right carb for this engine? What should the timing be set at with vacuum advance disconnected? Should I set the valve lash?
Also on a different note. He installed new motor/trans mounts a couple weeks back. He lifted the truck with a floor jack under the front axle. Now he says the truck is leaning towards the passenger side by a couple inches. Broken spring or is it possible the shackle has turned upside down?
Valve lash shows .019 intake and same for exhaust. At operating temperature. Or hot we call it. Timing only says 2 degrees advance @500 RPM. At my altitude 4400ft we set a couple few degrees more, depending. Always disconnect and plug distributor vac line first. I would definitely set the valve lash, because as the valve and seat wears they seat deeper which lessens the clearance so the valve can overheat and burn. Buy a vacuum gauge for tuning, and have fun.
