Talking 1999 Mercury Mountinner Engine Upgrade!

Hello, ok so to start off I was just a little curious as to if anyone had ever swapped out there engine in a 1999 mercury mountaineer v8.

I would like to get a BETTER engine. Preferably one with higher performance.. maybe at around 300+ HP. Any suggestions on what type of engine would fit in there with little to no Major modifications to the engine bay itself would be fantastic.

Mine has only got 91,000 miles on it or so. I could run it for much longer. But i have the extra cash laying around and I love my little SUV so I have a need to upgrade the little guy.

Any help from anyone who has any experience with what im looking of will be greatly appreciated!

Are you set on the 1999 body style? The Lincoln Aviator, which is very similar to the 2003-2005 Mountaineer (next generation after your 1999 style) has the DOHC V8 with just over 300 HP. I wouldn't really try swapping that engine in to a 1999 Mountaineer as it would likely be less expensive to just buy a decent Aviator than to try to swap engines.

I will look into that for sure!

but I really would love to keep the mountaineer because it has such low car mileage and the interior is ungodly PERFECT.

If i were to sell the mountaineer would u know of a good price range i could reasonably sell it for? I can give you a list of specs if you want... Its got every upgrade that was offered at the time but the 4x4 option.

I really wouldn't have a good estimate on what your Mountaineer would be worth. It varies by geographical location, the market, what other similar vehicles sell for, and if you sell Private Party or to a dealer. Ultimately it comes down to what someone is willing to pay for it.

You could check websites such as NADA, Kelley Blue Book - New & Used Car Price Values, and New Cars, Used Cars, Car Reviews and Pricing | Edmunds.com to get a rough idea of what you could expect to get for resale and trade in value.

Chances are really good though that if you swapped in a different engine it would have to be for the love of a challenge. You'll likely never get out of it (financially) what you will need to put in to it to make such a swap work.

Another option if you have the space and consider the cost of registration and insurance would be to pick up a second vehicle that offers the power/performance you seek, such as an older Mustang. Drive that when you feel like you need the performance, drive the Mountaineer when you need the practicality. The fuel economy savings over the Mountaineer might help offset the purchase and insurance costs over the long term.
