my 94 2.3 5 sp 2wd is having problems idling. it starts easy and will idle good (maybe a warmup speed or something?) then it starts idling fast then slow and so on. i cleaned the mass airflow sensoron the airbox. any ideas could it be just because it has 387000 miles? know thats a lot but it runs like new with any throttle at all? thanks
Mine did the same thing...check the Idle Air Control (IAC) and the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), both located on the throttle body. Autozone will pull the codes for free if the Engine Light comes on...I think the TPS is about $12, and the IAC, there have been threads here saying there from $20-$65 depending on were you go...
If it's just idleing rough, good thing to start with is the IAC, If the RPM's are fluctuating while driving...TPS
what do you mean by cleaning it? is their to metal things inside like the maf? my hanes manual says not to use solvent on the IAC solenoid? how should i clean it? do i need to disconnect it from the throttle body? also my relative has a 97 ranger 2wd 2.3. could i try thiers to see if mine is the problem or is it more complicated then that?
the IAC in my 94 2.3 is from a 94 F150 and I have never had any problems with it...I am not sure if the parts are differant..but they look exactly alike, and mount the same way...wouldn't hurt to try...as long as they are similar
I have a 94 2.3 5 sp 2wd as well, can someone confirm for me that the IAC on this vehicle is on the back of the throttle body near the firewall. If I remove it to clean it, can I re-use the gasket? Also, I was going to clean the MAF yesterday and discovered those nasty security star screws, where can I find screwdriver bits for them? Thanks much in advance.
Aberfoyle: The security star bits are available at many hardware and/or electronics stores. They are not expensive.
Clean your MAF with throttle-body cleaner not carburetor cleaner because of the coatings. As far as the IAC, also use the throttle body cleaner and clean the passageway inside the throttle body itself. Gasket can be reused if not damaged. Check for leaks around the gasket after reinstallation.
