I bought a F-250 a few months ago. Currently I have the 4.9L and a 5 speed, unsure which transmission to be exact, but I'm fairly sure it's a ZF-45 or -47 since it's a F-250 (any advice there would be great!), 2WD, regular cab long bed. I'm considering changing it to either a 5.8L or 7.3L, make it a bit of a sport truck. Are those engines ok with my current transmission? Which would be better for a performance truck?
The 351W (5.8L) shares the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 300 (4.9L) six, so you could keep your trans if you swap to a 351. The 460 (7.5L) is a different pattern and would require a different trans.
Which engine is better for a performance truck? The frst question is what kind of performance are you looking for? Being able to competently move a load? Being able to blow off sports cars from a stop light? I'll assume you want power and acceleration.
When it comes to power, there's no replacement for displacement. All else equal, more cubic inches will give more power. That said, a 351 can give very good usable power, probably giving a little better mileage when you aren't tromping on it, compared to the 460. The 300 is a competent engine, but unless you go really ridiculous with a build it ain't no powerhouse.
I'm a big fan of teh 4.9L so I have to disagree slightly but I understand the thought. It does take quite a bit up front to get a 4.9 really moving. The 5.8 is a good all around motor for towing, acceleration and load carrying. It's the happy medium of everything offered in my opinion. What's the goal?
