Small block trans/engine swap

Hey all, my son is looking for his own bullnose to build up and most likely mod. We've found plenty of trucks with 302s, which would promptly be swapped out for either a 351 or 300. My understanding is both the I6 and the Windsors will bolt up to the same transmissions, but Ive heard that the I6 has a diff bolt pattern? Which is correct?
Thx in advance

240/300, 302, 351W all use the same bell pattern.

Serving suggestion would be to just run the 302. The 300 offers no advantage in the fuel economy department, & makes slight less power at lower revs.(depending on year)

I would tell you the same thing about going to a 302 over a 300--not worth the effort.

The 351w will drink more gas, but would be worth the effort power wise. And it would give you a better base to work with for even more power.

Having said that, the 302 will scoot the truck around just fine....

Thx for the clarifications

I think he's looking to build a 4 wheeler type truck, would the 300 torque be better or would a 351 stroker be sufficient

There is no replacement for displacement!, having said that, I wheeled a 1983 Jeep CJ7 with a 258 I6 for years and had plenty of torque, that said the jeep weighs significantly less than any of these trucks (and also at the first chance I got I swapped in a 360). I know this sounds crazy but for the price of the swap and chasing parts, I would suggest looking a little past your local area to see if you can find one that already has the 351

I have been driving a Jeep myself for 15 years. And the 258/4.0 I6 engine is incredible. I would take that engine over a larger-displacement 304 or 360 V8 any day.

Im curious now, Wouldnt a 460 have more torque? Is the reason no one mentioned this due to availability in parts VS the 351W and 300 I6?

The OP never mentioned that as an option, plus BBF parts are getting harder to find, whereas their SBF counterparts are much easier.

I figured that was the reason.

OP, are you trying to haul or you just want lots of torque?

I don't doubt the fact that your Jeep is much faster than mine. I have seen MANY people in Jeeps similar to mine but with larger V8 engines ranging from a 304 all the way to a 401! While the larger engines do sound cool with the side pipes, the problem is the power. In a smaller Jeep CJ/YJ/TJ, these larger-displacement engines have so much power on tap that they will spin the tires when that is the absolute last thing you want to happen on the trails or on the rocks.

Oh no my CJ was not built for speed, all torque, that coupled with ARB lockers and 4.10s she'll just about bring the front end off the ground

The 460 is definitely a no, I have no problem with my son having a hopped up truck but I'd rather not have 8ish mpg to go with it. This would be mostly for the back roads and an occasional light trail ride or highway trip, but I'm sure it would be in a couple races

8ish is rather conservative

You want to stroke a 351w? You could stroke the 302 and get more cubes and a little more power.

Personally I would give him one with a 302 and have a another 302 as a spare. The limited power will be good for saving the drivetrain and the other engine will swap in when he over revs and blows the other one up. If the 302 doesn't have enough get up and go, I would change the gearing to 4.10's or higher. He can run big tires and give him lots of low end grunt, and this would limit his top speed, which as a parent I think I would want to do.
