A friend has a 1962 292 out of a F100.
I've heard some of the YBs had some weak points?
I'm thinking of this motor ad a backup should the flathead ever give up.
Your thoughts on a 292 transplant, and the usability of this generation of engine.
The Y block is a good engine when maintained correctly. They require clean oil and an occasional valve adjustment. There is a dog leg between the deck and heads where oil can clog the passages if not kept clean, changed on schedule. This results in oil starvation at the rockers. The solid lifters are difficult to change, they're captured.
If I were installing another type engine in place of a flat head, I would probably go with a more modern engine such as a SBF or SOB, something with parts more readily available.
I've owned several Y blocks over the years and they've all been good.
