hello im working on a 1986 f-150. 2wd auto. the tilt mechanizem went to crap. i found a parts column will the guts out of a 85 column work in my 86? also does anyone have a exploded view of the columns parts and how they go in? thank you have a great day.
The guts from the 85 will work in the 86 but I strongly suggest you replace the entire thing as an assembly; steering columns are intricate assemblies with some tiny parts that all need to go together exactly correctly for it to work right.
In general, working on steering columns sucks....
Below is an exploded view from the parts catalog as well as the entire section from the shop manual (choose what pertains to you):
ya holy cow. ya i already made the choice of taking it apart. i dont know why but i did its all back togther now. only thing that doesnt work is the tilt itself. thanks for all the help.

Look at 3B661 in this parts catalog pic (it's a curved piece in the upper center of the pic). This is the tilt wheel locking lever, has serrations on it that wear down.
When this occurs, the tilt wheel will not lock in place, will just "flop around."
E2TZ-3B661-A (replaced D0AZ-3B661-A) .. Tilt Wheel Locking Lever / Obsolete
Applications: 1978/91 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline / 1970/80 FoMoCo Passenger Cars / 1981/90 FoMoCo Passenger Cars with the tilt wheel operated by the T/S handle.
No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any. AFAIK, it's not repro'd.
