Finally I got a day off and the right coupon from BJ's was about to expire. Anyway a $70 off coupon was available on the BJ's website.
So, I got the BFG Rugged Terrain P265-70-17 out the door for $657.
I read plenty of reviews on these tires and while many reviews were less than stellar, they were mainly from people who were towing heavy and the tires were wearing prematurely because of the towing and heavy hauling. However, many reviews are outstanding.
These tires are simply not rated for heavy work but are great for lighter work. They have a 50K mile warranty and hopefully they last most of that.
Apparently they're selling pretty well, there were none in my size to be had in the state of Va in the BJ's network or from the local supplier. They are coming from Salisbury, Md.
I have 50K miles on the outgoing Hankooks. 5/32's of tread remains and I was going to wait till fall to replace them but they're starting to feel a little squirrely in heavy rain.
Anyway, there are plenty fo great tires out there. I was looking real hard at the LTX and the K02's but they are way more aggressive than I need. I looked at the Coopers but my boss had bad luck with them. I looked at the Firestone Destination AT's but they are way too expensive for what you get.
I had them on my Cheerokee They are good tires if I remember right there rated for 40,000 I could be wrong there. They handled, rode great they wore down evenly.I replaced them with Cooper AT 3 and like them also.
Thanks guys. A weird thing that struck me funny is when you talk to people who have certain things, they sometimes give strange responses to questions.
On my daily walk about of delivering the mail I get to see what people really have in their garages and on their trucks. I've been on my new route for about 8 months now and there are a ton big trucks in my new area. As opposed to my last route where there were a ton of CV's riding on 24's and 26's.
Anyway, I've approached numerous truck owners about their tire choices as many of them went the non conservative route and bought the LTX's, K02's and many others of much more aggressive nature and not one of these guys said that they would spend that amount of money on tires here in SE Virginia again.
At BJ's, the LTX's would have been about $1000 OTD and the K02's about $1075. The Rugged Terrain's were literally 65% of that price with only 10K miles difference in tread wear warranty.
I was also looking at the Long Trail T/A by BFG. These come standard on the Nissan Frontier and many of the full size SUV's on my route are running them. I loved the tread pattern, slightly less aggressive than the Rugged Terrains but like the K02's, BFG won't back them with a treadlife warranty. They were priced about $165 each and they were right in my wheel house as they have nice deep wide rain grooves.
That is a good looking tire. I have to admit, part of my buying process is how the tire looks. I'll be looking at that there tire when it's time for me to replace my Nittos
