Not with what I am taking tomorrow. Only if I was taking the muzzleloaders. The shotguns dont make much smoke at all.

I figured you'd be shooting the musket.

I've only shot a black powder gun once, they seem to be a lot of fun but I guess you have to clean them fairly soon after firing them I'm told.

Yeah blackpowder stuff has to be cleaned pretty quickly. If you dont the residue will eat the barrels from the inside out. The residue absorbs moisture from the air and turns into a mildly acidic thing that eats metal slowly.

Do you need special solvents for this?

Nothing really special needed at all. I use a water based black powder solvent and all of my cleaning tips and brushes for the barrel are for 12 gauge shotguns. Dor the lock I use a cheap toothbrush from walmart to scrub the lock.

When I do field cleaning of it at a renactment we just use alot of hot water to flush all of the residue out of the barrel and to clean the lock.

Depending on the event quite alot can be done. When we would do the one event in Ft Erie we could go through at east 200 rounds of ammo in a day for our regiment alone. ( blanks of course.) I have fired enough at that even in the evening battel that the barrel of the musket was too hot to handle. I have used a cartrdige box with room for 36 rounds and have filled that and placed anoter 20 rounds on top of those, plus another 40 in my haversack and have used all of the ounds and had to borrow more.

Smallest I shoot for blackpowder is .69 caliber. That is a 480 grain solid soft lead ball. LArgest I shoot is .72 caliber which weighs in at 550 grains of soft lead.

Howdy John and Shaun!

Had a rainy start to the day but cleared up this afternoon but the grass was too wet to mow. Played in the shop today.
