Will this timing meter work for us?

I'm looking into purchasing a timing meter and found a Kent Moore with the following description:

This item includes the following:
J-33300 Base tester
J-33300-10 & 33300-30 Luminosity Probe & Probe Harness
J-33300-20 Magnetic Crankshaft Probe

Is this the correct set-up for out trucks, or would I need additional parts?

Thanks!

Jan

yeah.i was pretty sure i recalled Gary over on obn uses those kent more's in his timing rental program so i just checked and it looks like those are the ones he likes.

so it looks as if you have everything needed to time it via luminosity.
you've got to be sure the lumy probe being sold with the meter is the one for 6.9l/7.3l idi though.pricey! so be sure it's included or you'd probably be better off just buying the line clamp.
this is the old school method where you screw in a probe in place of a glow plug.it's kinda fun and interesting but you really should know the local cetane rating of your fuel to use it properly.......but you can always follow the chart.set it to the center someplace (like around 6 ATDC) run it for a bit, then try a degree or two back each way to find what gives you the best economy/feels best to ya.

since it doesn't look like it comes with a piezo clamp, you'd need to buy that separately.that is only if you wanted to time it BTDC.this is the more modern method where you time at 8* BTDC (plus or minus two.) but this meter could time both ways if you had the clamp.

my personal opinion.what you have will work and that's what id buy if the deal was right (and only if i could test in person before buying,or if it came with a return period.)
and if i lived out in Cali like you do (where the diesel cetane number is awesome!!!!) id set her at 4 ATDC (or 5 ATDC if your up above 3k ft.) and enjoy it just like this! this timing method is a real hoot! i miss it.
(which would be approx like running 9-10 BTDC.)
