Diesel Timing Adapter - Will This Work?
Diesel Timing Adapter - Will This Work?
I am in the middle of changing out my IP and injectors. Got the U-haul deal on the IP and spent a few extra to get new injectors from Russ.
I am pretty sure i can get it running Ok by ear, but to really make it work the best, i need to set the timing. I know the Ferret piezo electric will work and is around $200 or more, but I also found this luminosity probe kit:
Diesel Timing Adapter for Ford and GM - eBay (item 270698142482 end time Feb-25-11 23:00:37 PST)
Do you all think this would work? It seems to be the same principle as the Snap-On set-up, but different in that it uses an extra timing light. It is cheaper to buy this than I can take it to a local shop to have it done, and then I have it for future use. If I understand correctly, this probe is inserted in place of the glow plug on #1, then I just hook a a std induction pickup timing light to some lead coming from the small box?
Assuming that it does work, what is the timing setting to use? I believe I read when using the luminosity probe, it is set to some amount ATDC, since it is actually sensing the fire, not the pulse which is set BTDC.
Thanks for the help and any advice, Terry

Hmmm, looks like it works like the Ferret but using Luminosity instead of pulse... should work, but make sure you get the right settings, from what I understand, Luminosity method has quite a few variables involved, such as fuel type etc...
i asked about those over on oil burners.
they say they do NOT work.
your correct in that luminosity is set ATDC and pulse is set using BTDC though.
assuming it would work;
there is no "one setting fit's all" when using a lumy probe like the pulse adapter method.
elevation and cetane value must be obtained to properly time the engine first.otherwise, the meter is of little use,and you might as well just time by ear.
a tool like this is good to have for lumy testers:

unless your into classic tools, and find it interesting and fun.do yourself a favor and just buy the ferret adapter and good timing light with advance to make it work properly.

I have a friend who bought two of these a while back, one for north American (imperial threads) and a second one just for the probe and had it re-threaded for European diesels (metric)
He gave me the old "it's not like I'm making a grand piano" argument, and said they are good enough considering how much cheaper than the ferrat adapter :
Diesel Timing Adapter FOR Ford AND GM | eBay
I held off on buying one cause I didn't need it at the time, but now that I do, I see that they've gone up in price... not too much though so I don't mind.
