All: I am trying to help a young feller trying to start a landscaping business. I sold him a solid 390 to replace the worn out "360" in his '70 F-600 dump truck.
Turns out, he has an FT 361 or 391, and I'm trying to help him get the 390 in.
1. Can he eliminate the front engine mount (under the radiator) and put in side engine perches instead?
2. Will FE perches from a F-150/250/350 bolt up in to the F-600?
3. Would it be easier/cheaper to just rebuild the FT he has?
What's keeping you from mounting the 390 using the front mount? I understand the blocks to be almost identical from the outside. I thought the differences were in the crank snout and the distributor shaft sizes.
The front mount won't work in this case because it is integral with the cast iron timing chain cover - which has the wrong sized hole for the crank snout.
I think he would be better off with the 391. It's got lower compression and is made to pull a load. The 390 will do it but the 391 is a better choice. The front cover is the first of many headaches you will encounter in making this stop.
