I know this is almost beating a dead horse, but I've gotta ask it.
I'm in the market for a 4x4 IDI manual to bring back to school with me next year. I'm bad at sticking value on things, so I figured I'd ask the experts on this one.
I came across this;
1988 F250
7.3
ZF5
Dana 60 SAS
185k
I don't know much more beyond that, except that the current owner uses it as a DD.
He's asking $4500, which I think is a smidge high. I'd be more comfortable with maybe $4k, especially since it's a ways away. But maybe I'm crazy
One could easily spend 4000 - 5000 on a f250 in that shape and era and then spend another 1000 or more to do the solid axle conversion. It all comes down to how much you want one...and ask yourself how long before another one comes up at that price, or will you have to end up paying 6000 for a truck.
more than enough for a navistar engine/trans to swap into that '76. lot cheaper running that car to school though.more coin for beer and pizza.
You know I've seriously considered it, but I'll get a different highboy for that project. The 300 isn't the most desirable engine for that gen, but it has a certain "cool" factor for me, and its got more value that way anyway. 300/NP435 and 4wd in an F250 is not a common truck
yeah that 300 is fords most longest lasting engine and a great setup like that,i agree.the diesels are expensive to run compared to those.very much so compared.i miss the 300 in that aspect.may not have the power the diesel does but shoot,they do just fine too.why not be content and just run that truck? she's way cooler than that 8th gen truck.

There are a couple reasons why I won't bring it back;
1: I don't trust it to make the drive
2: I don't want to drive it 2000 miles here (way to ****ing loud)
3: I don't want to subject it to the harshness of the winters out here (i.e salt)
I just upgraded her shoes from 31" to 35" at the end of winter break, but only got a chance to drive it a few times before I left. She probably drives a lot nicer at highway speeds than it did before.
At least with a diesel it would get decent mileage on the drive out thanks to the 5 speed, and I'd be able to pull our race trailer if need be.
