I just bought a '95 F250 4x4 with a 460. I have been curious about installing a chip down the road, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it in the end. I don't have a lead foot but would like to freedom to do whatever was needed. However, with the 4.10 rear end, I would need a good tach to keep a better watch on the rpms. Any suggestions?
Put a factory tach cluster in it. Unless you're racing it don't need to be that responsive as long as it's accurate. My factory tach agrees with the PCM... accurate enough for me.
I would build a better suited platform such as a car or sportbike, in college I had a yamaha r6 for example that ran 186 off the showroom floor.but if you only wanted to run a buck twenty or so I would find a single cab shortbed f150 and do a 408 stroker or A 460 swap.
Nobody has ever had a stock 186 MPH R6. That's right at the very highest top speed for a R1. Fastest I could find for the R6 is 167.
The idea is not to beat land speed records or anything but to have fun if I could hit 140 on the salt flats I would be more then thrilled. Also on the bumps I believe the salt flats are smooth and softer then concrete so that should help and I would imagine the truck your talking about might be a good bit more front heavy then mine so that might effect it as well
I think Darwin Awards LLC makes a chip for that... The only appropriate place to go that fast is on a well maintained track. I'm sure your truck could be built up enough to make it possible, but IMHO going that fast in a dually is dumb. Yank that 460 out and drop it in a cheap fox body mustang to have all the speed you need.

oppps my bad it was an R1, i had that when the whole bigger was better thing i had going on was in full force. i confused its top speed with the r6 i have now, my bad
cbakker Really man? So the salt flats aren't well maintained? Last I checked the salt flats are the best place for hitting max speed but people have only been doing that out there for 100 years so I'm sure you know more about it then them you should call them and have them close up shop. Making a pickup go 140 is dumb? So it's stupid for someone to enjoy a vehicle and push it to the max? You better call the guys who set speed records in semis and tell them they should go buy a mustang.
I was goimg to say. I only had my 03 R6 do 156 right against the governor
Was that indicated or actual? The speedometers on most of the crotch rockets are pretty optimistic. I seem to recall reading that the tachs were a little off too, but in the other direction. I think Yamaha wanted to claim a 14000 rpm redline when it was actually in the 13's.

it can be either, a majority of bikes are off by a margain. the governor reads off the same number the speedo is reading whether it is accurate or not. there are two ways to get around this number. 1 is to get a custom tune or tune it yourself if you have the software to remove the speed limiter, i have not really looked into it i chose the second option for the r1, which was to install a piggyback device into the computer (and i am kicking myself right now becuase i should know what its called but i cant remember lol) that corrects the speedometer so that it reads true at higher speed, this doesnt really make the bike more powerful but the governor kicks in at true speed instead of reading say 150 mph and limiting it when actual speed is only 135 mph.

Not trying to crush your dreams, but the reason I said IMHO is because it is my opinion. I only have the need for speed when I jump on something designed for it, like an R1(in my case, my '82 Maxim 1100). If your dedicated to the idea, don't let me hold you back.

Well. I am not posting from jail si it is from the speedo. It actually shut down at 156 but I was able to get up to 157. And IIRC it slowed to 153 before the governor let ti have fuel again
Way back when, when I had my original 1988 XLT Lariat (the dark & light gray one I loved), I drove her -solo- out to California & back... I know this- she cruised from Monterey Cal. back to the New Mexico-Texas state line in less than 24 hours... At one lonely point, she was running around 85 for several hours straight: and I am pretty sure she had more to go... She had the 5.0l V-8 with the AODE(IIRC) trans...
She was a lovely truck... I am thinking my 91 will be just as enjoyed... (The blue & silver 88 I had never made high marks. I guess part of it was I never forgave it for running out of gas on my first day at a new job, because the last owner had failed to tell me the tank leaked, and the gauge was wonky in that one... lol... However, I gave that one to an ex-girlfriend from Hell to get her, her crap & her kids back to Texas one year: And the exhaust broke at the front of the muffler just when I dropped it off. So she had 1600 miles of exhaust noise... She gave the truck to her dad- he loved it- and remarried her ex-husband whom I'd paid to fly up and drive back to Texas with her... lol... Seems the trip "gave them time to talk")
