Looking to Install a Dash Cam

So after watching an '08 F350 get destroyed yesterday by a young guy driving a Jeep who appeared to be in a hurry, I've come to the conclusion that I want to install a 2 channel dash cam. I've been wanting to install a rear view camera to make hooking up the trailer easy, but never really cared for the aftermarket set up.

If I put a dash cam in I need it to have many purposes, event recording which would have been nice to show the police yesterday, vehicle security (DVR) while parked, aid me in hooking up the trailer, and keeping an eye on the teenager who will be driving it. I've narrowed my choices down to the Lukas LK-7950 WD ($267) or the LK-9750 Duo ($399). The DUO is a full touch screen unit which is 100% self contained, and the WD unit has no display and is managed via wifi to a smartphone app.

I'd like to hear from people who may have dash cams set up and your personal experience with these and/or other units and what you do/don't like about them.

I'm very interested in this too. I'd love to use this video to give bad drivers the treatment they deserve.

Driving a truck dragging a huge trailer earns me the honor of being cut off regardless the fact that I'm not in the fast-lane etc..
I'd like to know more about these because one of these days I will have a moron stuck in my grill and want to prove that he chopped me and then dynamited his brake pedal...

Hauling 18K of 5th wheel I decided we needed a dash cam after being cut off by a canadian truck driver, on I-81 in NY, in a construction zone. He passed me on the right then cut us off forcing me onto the shoulder. He came from behind using inertia from the hill. We were doing 45-50, slowing down for the work zone.

I looked for troopers for the next 20 miles, knowing they really couldn't do anything, but hoping professional courtesy could at least have resulted in delay and paperwork inspection of the driver.

I have tried a couple different cams. Right now I am using the Garmin that Costco had.
It works pretty good, especially in daylight. Some samples below.

I am seriously considering the Lukas 9750 for the dual cam setup. I could make good use of the rear cam as well for hitching up. The Lukas stuff has some pretty good reviews and following.

Ice hit. The law is remove the snow and ice. How do you prove it though? Dash cam.
The big chunk that actually hits the windshield is just out of cam range, but you can hear. It hit square right in my line of site.

Accident. The moron in the SUV runs a stop sign and sends some poor girl into a PIT maneuver. She literally missed me by a few inches criss crossing the road before ending up in some one's front yard with blown out tires.
The guy gets out screaming at the girl for running the same stop from the side street. Had to intervene, get the PD there and magically he changed his story once he found out there was a witness. The girl used my video for her insurance claim. Saved he the deductible.

Yellow light. I saved this as a test. Ever get stopped for a yellow red light issue? This one looks close enough to have warranted a stop. The full HD version of this video, in frame by frame clearly shows the light is still yellow when my hood crosses the plane of view.

18K of toy hauler merging onto a open lane, clear for a t least a half mile behind, except for the azz-hole in the mercedes.
The HD version frame by frame has a perfect capture of the plate.

Another azz-hole that just has to cut off a truck and trailer to make his exit.

So - I run with the cam on all the time, waiting for the one in a million video (unless you are in russia).
Figure I'll put the Lukas dual cam in the truck and the Garmin in my wife's car.

The light was yellow all the way through that intersection as shown by the light on the post at eye level on the exiting side of the intersection.

That is the light I was going by. At the time I was not sure if I cleared it in time or not - hey "lets go to the video tape"

Who knows, the day will come when the cams play a bigger part in court.
My LEO son says they cannot always act on a non witnessed event based solely on a dash cam.

They may not can act upon it, but it sure stacks the deck.

In my state, the state government is talking about raising the speed limit in some areas from 65 mph to 70 or 75 mph. My state is one of the few states left that tops out at 65 mph.

Although I would like to see a higher limit because people (including myself) mostly drive 75 on the freeway. We have plenty of camping going on in Wisconsin and I think about the huge campers and RVs that I see driving today at 60-65. If we raise our limit to 70/75, plenty of drivers are going to go from 70/75 to 80/85 mph. The guy with the Ford and huge camper is not going to speed up any with the new limit. I think we will see even more crazy driving.

If you could order a Ford with dash and rear cam, I would order this option.

But, a gotcha cam will result in a red light or a speeding ticket every time? Funny how that works.

So where are mounting these and how are you powering the cameras?
Are you putting up behind the mirror and bringing power thru the headliner.

Behind the mirror as high as the screen will allow and the power coming in from the headliner down to to an up fitter.

I run with commercial insurance and I'm going to find out if I get any sort of discount if I use a dash cam. Seems like I've heard something to that effect somewhere?

Count me in the seriously looking at this club.
