I am about to buy a 302 with a c4 transmission to put in my 62. I was just curious about the c4. Are they pretty strong and reliable? Or i also already have a c6 tranny laying around that needs rebuilt. Which of the two would have the best performance and reliability?
They are both good transmissions. Both can be built to heavy duty specifications.
Just like using the right tool for the right job, what do you want your truck to do?
The C4 was used many years, and is reliable as a transmission. It doesn't rob the engine of too much power.
The C6 is a bullet proof power horse, but you pay for the power - as much as a 25% loss. It is a truck and heavy car transmission.
One important note, is that the C6 case is formed for the block pattern it is made for, and cannot be changed. A C6 case for an FE won't fit any other engine, and so forth. Is your C6 a 302 bolt pattern?
Unless you intend to use your truck like a work truck, I think the C6 may be more than you need.
I'm not an expert on the C4 by any means but from what I have researched about them, they can be built stronger than a c-6 and are a better performance transmission. Also some years are better/more desirable than others.
If your truck is the half ton SWB, it's really not that heavy. A 64 flare side weighs about 3100-3200lb. Cars although somewhat streamlined are much heavier in that era.
I have had C4s in my various Mustangs over the years. Before you install one do yourself a favor and replace all the seals and 0-rings. Mine always seemed to leak where the tube goes in the pan and where the shifter shaft comes out the side of the case.
