charging issue

I hope you had a better choice of alternators than I did. I put 3 of the el-cheapo's from autozone before I wised up and ponied up for a good one from O'Reillys.

All the el-cheapo's showed them charging in the store(cold). Like the guy said, as soon as it got hot I guess, it wouldn't do didly. 2 out of 3 didn't show any batt light. Bought a new one and it's been perfect ever since.

Just my .02 cents anyway.

Key on engine off- no batt light. Key on engine running- no batt light

.02 volts while running with heater fan on high and lights on

The warning light should be on when the engine is not running since the alternator isn't outputting any current.

If there is no voltage available on the alt lamp circuit the regulator won't wake up and energize the field coils.


Check that fuse #19 is good and making good contact in its socket, that the socket is hot with KOEO, that the alt lamp is not burned out, that the light green wire on the back of the alt has voltage available with the KOEO and has good contact within the connector.

If the alternator isn't turned on, there won't be any meaningful voltage drop on the ground side of the alternator circuit.

Fuse #19 inside or under the hood?? My book says inside one is for airbag diagnostic monitor and instrument cluster. Under hood is for the fuel pump..

KOEO I'm not showing anything at the green wire. I checked with it unplugged from the alternator, at the splice where I put a new plug on with it plugged into the alternator, and at the plug where it plugs in behind the mega fuse and got nothing. Fuse 19 inside is hot with KOEO.

Actually I believe it's the #16 under the hood that powers the charging light circuit.

Thanks for all the replys guys. Problem is fixed. Loose connection in the big plugs on the back of the inside fuse panel..

Inside. Under the I/P. Maybe that's the one you swapped out due to the windshield leak. And maybe the connector wasn't reconnected correctly?


Anyhow, you gotter fixed.

I ended up taking certain individual wires out of the two main block plugs that go into the inside fuse block and cleaned and recrimped to make sure they were making good contact. It done the trick

Good find, those type of electrical issues are sometime hit or miss with a dash of luck thrown in.
