OK so I'm having trouble with the idle speed on my 79 f150 with a 460. when i first start the engine when its cold and let off of the gas pedal it dies out but if i keep my foot on the pedal just a little bit it'll stay running then when it warms up i can let off of the pedal and it will idle just fine. what could my problem be??????? i read somewhere that it could be a bad accelerator pump. if it helps any I'm running a holley 4180 4bbl carb.
Mine will do the same thing (400) if I peddle it. What I do instead is pump once before starting to set choke/fast idle and give it a shot of fuel. Then start it without touching the gas. Usually works. Let it run on fast idle for a minute or so then use the peddle.
whens cold it wont idle {and i do think that my electric choke might be sticking a little bit open} the when it warms up it idles just a little bit fast for my taste. like if i take my foot off of the gas when I'm out driving it'll run about 10 mph just by the idle speed but if i slow the idle speed down then it dont run quite right could this be a carb related problem
If you have to pump your pedal to start in addition to not having cold idle, then your choke definitely isn't adjusted properly. It should be one press to the floor to set the choke, then let off the throttle and crank right up, when everything's properly adjusted.
Here's another vote for the choke. That 4180 has a fast idle cam which should hold the throttle a bit more open when the engine is cold if it's working correctly. An adjustment may be needed.
I have an edelbrock 1405, similar issue. What would be the best way to adjust or determine if you're doing it right? I'm no expert with these, and it was put on by a previous owner who lived in California. Picture for reference...
