I have a holley 600cfm on my 79 F250 4x4. Its runs at a top during the summer or when its warm. Now that its cold out it runs like crap. To start it i push the pedal to the floor once and then turn the key and it stsrts right up, soimetimes after about 30 seconds it starts running rough and then dies. I'm pretty sure thats cause i don't have the high idle cam adjusted to a high enopugh rpm. But other then that once i do get it warm in the cold months it will idle, but it idles rough. And when i get to a stop sign or let off the gas and then go to take off it hesitates and then gets like a surge of gas. What can i do to prevent this? Does this all come back to the choke/high idle? It only does this in the winter time. I have had this carb on this same engine since 98 and have never touched it ever or had a problem except the chome in the winter but thats not a big concern to me. This is not the stock set-up with air cleaner. Its got headers, and open element air filter. Any help would be great.
The hesitation is probably due to the accelerator pump. Wich can be easily adjusted by tightening the accelerator pump screw/spring just enough so the spring is not free to move up and down within the screw (play). As far as the choke is it manual or electric? You are supposed to adjust the choke according to the weather winter/summer. You can do this without messing with the high idle cam. It just a matter of playing with it and testdriving. I usually do this on my 77 f150 with a holley street avenger that supposely was trouble free. But almost every 3 to 4 months I pulled out my vaccum gauge adjust the mixture screws and idle speed and then procede to the choke and accelerator pump. If you have any questions let me know.
