Just heard this for the first time the other day, started it up and sounds nothing like a rod knock or anything mechanical. The first time it happened i shut it right off. upon restart nothing. I am not sure if its the dreaded "chuffing" from a hanging valve or what. It can't be many other things. once warm it does not seem to make the noise. truck runs strong, burns very little oil compared to what I read. maybe a half to one quart in 1000 miles. It started doing this after i changed the oil. coincidental? maybe. running rotella-t 15w-40. fl1995 PSD filter. last oil change (before i purchased truck) was at a WalMart. anything to look for without digging deep? have a trip in two weeks so this little gremlin is an inconvenience . any thoughts or insight would be much appreciated.
Yeah kinda a "thud-thud-thud" on cold start up? Mine lasted a few seconds or till oil pressure rose....
yep, sounds like what mine is doing. odd part is that even not plugged in, in sub-freezing temps it never made the noise. not until i changed the oil. kinda odd. do the oil filters on these engines allow drain back where the oil system has to re-prime itself?
