The Allison MT650 in my 74 C750 has had a catastrophic torque converter failure! When it went it belched a good deal of fluid out the vent and filler tube onto the exhaust which caught fire! I had 2' flames by the time I had the extinguisher on it. No fire damage!
So, ALWAYS CARRY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER!!!!
I need to know what trans will work in place of the MT650 if I cannot find one local? Truck is powered by the 391 4v.
Pretty discouraged right now, but I know it could have been much worse.
Pacific Detroit Diesel / Allison in Auburn WA still had even older MT40 rebuilds on the shelf a couple of years ago so the newer MT650 series should be even easier to find.
truckparts.com has lots of listings, at least last time I checked.
But as nev said, any MT650 series should work, as well as the four speed version, the MT640 series, although lack of that extra gear would be a real bummer imo.
