I have a 94 F350 Crew Cab Dually 4x4 that I am trouble shooting a transmission issue. I have been thru the wiring and sensors and checked their settings, harnesses, connections, ect.
I am pretty sure the torque convertor is bad. I have read thru the many posts on the subject and have a couple more things I will be checking tomorrow to confirm this. The transmission shutters at slow speeds and acts like it is slipping while in lock up. I also have code 62 continually coming back after clearing and driving. I had other codes also previously and have fixed those issues.
The main question I have is what Torque convertor you any of you recomend as a replacement if I find that it is bad. Tried reading posts to get answers but most of them where older dates and wanted a more updated answer. I pull a fifth wheel camper as well as heavily loaded gooseneck trailers regularly.
then flush the fluid the best you can.install new internal filter, and install one in the line for at least a couple thousand miles.that will increase your odds of getting anything thats come undone in the failed oem out of there, and likely save your trans.
consider the truck broken down, and don't even start the truck again if you can help it.
how many miles did she last before converter failure?
The truck is not being driven at all. I just recently purchased this unit to replace another truck and wanted a 4x4. It has 148k on the truck and the rebuilt trans has about 30-40k on it the best I could figure out from previous owner. Makes me wonder if the convertor was even replaced during rebuild. I have replaced the TPS, gear selector sensor, and repaired several issues with the wiring and these items may have done damage to the convertor due to the previous owner continuing to drive the truck with problems. I will know later this morning the final verdict after my last couple of tests on the truck.
I have owned several Ford Diesel trucks over the years most all where 5sp Zf transmissions. This is the first automatic, would have perfered the 5sp myseld but hard to find a nice clean truck.
I am debating what I want to do for now. The future will be a ZF conversion just lack all the parts needed and time. I have a doner truck for the petal system and a couple small parts but would have to find the rest. I have a couple 5 sp transmissions but they are 2wd units. They are both fully drivable 7.3 turbo diesels. I have debated selling these or parting them out.
oh if your looking for a zf5,don't waste your time or money of course.that'll be cheaper than a good converter for the E40D.
the converter was likely just not changed.probably didn't know how failure prone the oem's are.that or he skimped with a poor aftermarket.
you first checked the fluid level right?..........never hurts to make sure of the obvious.sometimes we forget the basics. but if your swapping trans, not sure why your spending $ for sensors and time diagnosing things.i guess in hopes to buy ya some time while you source the zf5 stuff and hoped the converter wasn't actually shot for now......no such luck though by the sounds of things.
I already made my final decision going to convert to 5 spd this one is an electrical nightmare and am not going to deal with that all summer. Once my summer starts I wont have time for this at all.
Found most of what I need that I didnt have. only a couple small items left to get. Trans, frt shaft, crossmember, harness, and misc hardware being pulled at a salvage yard as we speak. I have a doner truck for pedals and interior parts needed.
Have to get rear drive shaft or lengthen mine and research wiring changes needed under dash. I am ordering a new updated smf clutch, I dont mess with used clutches, I put on to many miles for that plus peace of mind.
So I think I am just going to part out my 2 other diesels since one is already going to be a doner anyway.

All the basics are always checked, have been working on vehicles for over 20 years. I have ran across people that have overlooked simple things that could have saved them alot of $$$$
inspect the solenoid pack plug.if you see bare wires there, they make a repair plug for it.
if it looks fine, pull it,clean it and pack it full of dialectic grease.if that doesn't clear those codes, the solenoid pack is likely shot and all the solenoids can be tested via resistance.
it wouldn't hurt to pull the pcm's harness to clean and pack that one with grease either.
Plug, harness, cleaned connection, and coated troughly already. Coil pack is toast. I think I may have a used one laying around in a different trans from a gas truck, have to check part numbers. My normal luck is they are different.
If it will work will probably put it in just to check if I have some extra time. Even if I am doing a 5 spd upgade, would like to know if trans is still good so someone else can benifet from it in the future instead of just scraping it out.
I had alittle time today so I put in a different solenoid pack, and the trans shifted well and solid. That is till limp mode took over for the bad torque convertor. At least I know the trans is in good shape. I decided to order in a new 3 disc convertor today though. Salvage yard had called and the tranny they where pulling for me ended up having a broken housing. I decided to run the auto for awhile so I can find a good manual core and have it rebuilt before putting it in. Most of the salvage yards I checked wanted just to much for them to me it would be better to buy a good core and rebuild it so I know what I have. This will give me some more time to collect the remaining parts. It doesnt take my son and I very long to pop in a torque convertor even on a 4x4.
It is a local to me trans rebuilder. Ft Dodge Transmissions, Ft Dodge, Ia.
They have been in business a long time and do quality work. Doesnt hurt I get a discount either. I checked into several companies but felt the most comfortable with them.
