97 Expedition running rough

So I have almost no experience with these newer vehicles. My parents 97 Expedition will run fine for months on end. Then, sometimes after running for awhile, if we stop at a store for a little bit, and fire it back up, it will run really rough and die if the throttle isnt applied. So far it has happened four times, one time with my dad, two times with me, and the last time two weeks ago was when my mother was driving. I have an obd2 bluetooth code reader that I can hook up to my phone, and every time Ive checked, no codes were stored. When it does this, it smells like its running really rich. When it happened to me and my dad, we just drove it home with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. But with my mom, I disconnected the battery in the safeway parking lot, and gave her a ride home in my bronco, and about an hour later, when I came back to get it with my dad, it ran just fine when the battery was hooked back up.

The last code we got from the computer was for an o2 sensor, but the code went away and hasnt come back. Its a 1997 eddie bower edition 5.4 triton. Any info or help would be very much appreciated

Sounds like one of the fuel injectors could be leaking and flooding the cylinder, or the fuel pressure regulator is toast. That would also explain the O2 sensor code. I'd start with a fuel pressure test.

I tested the fuel pressure today and it held strong at right around 30 psi

30 PSI is not strong. Here are the actual specs.
Engine Running 28-45 PSI
Key On Engine Off 35-45 PSI

I don't know if this might help, but mine was doing the exact same thing, so I took it to my regular mechanic and had him do a tune up on it. when I picked it up, he said it didn't need a tune up. all that was wrong with it was a couple of vacuum leaks. He fixed them and it runs fine now
