ATF /filter change

hello Excursion experts... this weekend my neighbor and myself will be doing the 60k miles service on my 2000 excursion v10. I have a few questions regarding the fluids and techniques associated with this service.

transmission fluid and filter change:

how much Mercon V fluid will I need for the change? is there any brand to avoid? do you reuse the pan gasket? filter kit came with new gasket...do you use either adhesive, silicone, both, or neither to secure pan gasket before reinstalling the pan? what is recommended torque on pan bolts?

Power steering fluid flush and bleed:

how much ATF will I need? what fluid is best? same mercon V? any tricks to burping the system? any helpful hints from experience?

plugs:

do they need to be indexed?

Coolant flush:

how much/type of coolant? and special tricks? is there a bleeder valve?

Thanks folks!

Coolant, atf flush and change, spark plugs, and transmission flush and filter and more are all covered in the tech forum in great detail. (careful clicking on the suspension threads... they are addicting)

60K miles is pretty low for a 2000 Ex, must not get driven very often, where are you located?

Welcome to the EX forum!
You have found the best place on the web for EX info, help and advice!
In the Tech Folder you should find the procedure for the full trans flush on your 4R100 trans, if I recall correctly that takes about 24 quarts or so.
The plugs do not need to be indexed, BUT it is very important to follow the proper steps for removal and replacement torquing in the early heads like your to prevent a plug blowout. That info will also be in the Tech Folders.

The proper location for the cork gasket that comes with the filter is in the trash. DO NOT install it on your trans unless you want a guaranteed leak. Use the original rubber gasket. It can be reused.
Any MERCON V fluid will work. You'll need 20 quarts to do this procedure. Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission - Ford Trucks

The pan bolts are 10-12 lb-ft.

Tech Folders are located at the top of the threads on this page of the EXcursion forum.
4th item down from the top says "Read First Excursion Forum Tech Folder"

Mike I think my earlier answer of 24 quarts for the flush was including doing the power steering along with the trans. 4 quarts for the PS flush should do it and you should use the same Mercon V fluid on both trans and PS. I'll be doing my shopping very soon for the fluid for my flushes too.
