This is fo a 2000 explorer XLT. I searched old posts and found the part number for the bulb. Replacing that isn't the problem. However, not I can't get the switch box cover to go back on. Its the one for on/off on the left side of the steering wheel. Any tricks to get it back on?
Remove the switch from the steering wheel. To remove the switch, you'll need to disconnect your battery and then remove the two screws on each side of the steering wheel to slide the air-bag module out. Once you have the air-bag out of the way, the cruise switch can be easily removed by removing the two screws holding it in. Once you do it, you'll wonder why you didn't try replacing the bulb this way in the first place. It should take you less than 10 minutes, start to finish.
And as long as he follows the procedure as I've described his "bomb" won't go off. Here is the actual procedure (minus the pictures):
Driver's Side
REMOVAL
Remove the battery cables.
1 Remove the battery ground cable.
2 Remove the battery to starter relay cable and wait one minute for the backup power supply to be depleted.
NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy.
Remove the driver side air bag module. NOTE: Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
1 Remove the two back cover plugs.
2 Remove the two driver side air bag module screws.
3 Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connector.
4 Remove the driver side air bag module.
If the driver side air bag module is diagnosed as faulty, dispose of the air bag.
