*208* Burnt Marshmallow Thread

I decided since I've got the X bug...it was time to start an official thread. (With pictures of course).

Picked up an 05 Limited V10 4x4 Excursion on 3/27. Stock except remote start, grill guard and a non-working Sirius adapter. Has the 2nd row captains that I absolutely love with having kids.

Purchased in Fargo, ND. Checked the fluid levels and drove it home the same day. 16 hours of absolutely boring driving. Had every weather condition possible. Wind, ice, snow, more wind...blue skies, 82 degrees going thru Montana and then a massive hail storm and lightning show an hour out from my home.

Here are some photos just before going under the knife for the much needed suspension upgrades.

Measurements from center of hubs to bottom of cladding: 22.5" front and 24" rear.

After the X fronts and C-XL rears from ATS Springs. Dual Bilsteins on the front, singles on the rear and a 30mm F350 sway bar.

Measurements after suspension install: 26" front and 26.75" rear.

Also had th front windows tinted. Much nicer inside now and will reduce the heat and UV during the upcoming summer months.

Just finished installing the PMF Dual Steering Stabilizer with 5100 Bilsteins. The kit is very nicely made and uses highly quality fasteners and dampeners. The drag link mounts are quite a PITA to get installed correctly.

Gained 50+hp with bling factor alone having these on the Burnt Mashmallow.

It does ride very nice after all the suspension work now. Very happy with the results. Would do it all over again if/when I get another X. (Thx to all on FTE for the help and knowledge!)

Future mods in order:
1) Tires/Wheels (Likely 35x12.50x20)
2) Drop hitch for towing the Jetskis and reconfiguring the WD hitch for the travel trailer
3) Banks Headers and complete Exhaust from collectors back (replace studs as well)
4) 5-Star tunes
5) New front deck, backup camera
6) Replace front door windows due to huge scratches from dirty felt

I have a vibration in the driveline that I need some help with. Comes on slightly at 35mph, then very heavy vibration from 50-68mph. Rear u-joint was replaced during spring install. Front u-joint original.

I measured the angles on the flange on the transfer case and it is 3.5* degrees and the flange on the pinion is 7.5*. Krazee Matt, you suggested a 4* axle shim to correct it in a previous thread that I didn't post angles in. You were 100% spot on...THX! Do you all think that bringing the angles back to 3.5* each will eliminate my vibration issues? Or do you think that the higher speed vibe is coming from a possible out of balance driveshaft?

The Marshmallow is looking good so far 208, keep it up!
I would get the driveline angle corrected first, that very well may be the source of the vibes, if it continues after correction then look at having the shaft balanced.
Sounds like a great list of future mods you have in mind too, love my Banks headers! What gears do you have? Only asking due to your planned 35"s and the mention of towing a travel trailer.

I thought only Chevies wore bow ties.

I have the 3.73's. I'm concerned about them as well with running 35's. This year will be only local camping trips and nothing more than 2 hours away from my home. The majority of the trips this year will actually be a campground that is 45mins from my front door. It's our most favorite place to camp and will give me some real good feedback on how the Burnt Marshmallow will do with the trailer. Already debating what gears I should be running as this is my wife's daily school bus and grocery getter. 4.30's or 4.56 is what I'm debating on.

That is a nice rig. Well done on the mods/upgrades.

As far as the gearing and 35" tires I would think the 4.56 would be a happy medium considering a bit more oomph in the towing and acceleration department yet not going to kill in the RPM cruisning range. I would most likely do the tuner and exhaust prior to gears though just so you can tell if gears are truly needed.

I understand your gear concerns. How much does your travel trailer weigh? What kind of highway speeds are common in your area? I know out West you guys typically are able to cruise a little faster than we can back East.
The V-10 with 3.73 gears pulling any kind of weight will get the job done but it will be a bit of a dog, ask me how I know. . Throwing 35"s into that same setup is gonna suck if that TT is any kind of heavy. With my 35's and 4.88 gears I have an effective ratio of 4.39 and at 75 MPH it revs at about 2650 RPMs. The factory option for the best towing rating with the V-10 was a 4.30 gear ratio, so keep that in mind, the 6.8 works very well with that ratio. . I don't see many solo miles or much daily driving with my EX but others have swapped up to 4.30 from 3.73s and have only lost about 1 MPG highway while actually gaining 1 around town. The swap to deeper gears improved my towing mileage by almost 2 MPG.

The Burnt Marshmellow is looking good *208*!

I noticed you have what looks like a V10 badge? I've been looking at this style on eBay for awhile. Same one?

Freeway speeds are 70 to 75 mph. Highway speeds are 55-65 mph.

So I guess I'm looking at 4.88's or 4.56's The wheelwells will look massively empty if I don't fill them up with some sizable tires. So I will need to eventually regear this Burnt Marsh.

Chad,

Those are the emblems on the fenders. They look good and I actually prefer a de-badged look on my vehicles. I'm leaving them and the excursion/limited badges.
