My oil is running about anywhere from 4-15 degrees hotter than my coolant. Running on flat ground @ 75 mph. It's about 8-12. I know it's got a Napa cap and filter. I'm planning on changing it to a motorcraft here soon. I just wanna know if I should have the engine flushed both in the oil and coolant.
The true test is running at a steady 65 mph for 15 or 20 miles after the engine is GOOD AND HEAT SOAKED with NO LOAD being pulled. If you have <15* difference you're in specification. And it really won't be accurate until you get the correct oil filter cap back on.
You also would only do a coolant, chemical, flush if you were changing the oil cooler. You could do a drain and refill with a 50/50 mix of new coolant if you don't know the age and mileage of what's in it now. If staying stock you would use either Ford premium Gold or Zerex G05. They are the same. You would not do an oil flush. If changing the filter and cap back to stock, highly recommended, I'd do an oil change then.
After that if your still pretty high, then a chemical flush of the coolant and then an oil cooler change. No flush of the oil and since your in there, maybe an EGR cooler as well....
Pull the EGR valve and see if its wet inside, if so, then an EGR delete or cooler would be needed also before its to late and it ruptures.
It's like impending doom... some guys are just a little head of the game, like me.
If you flush the coolant with chemicals, you will be doing an oil cooler. 4-15 isn't bad, but after doing the 65mph test and it's still high (15 or more), start saving.
That sounds better....
So I changed the oil. Damn that's expensive. No change in the temp difference. Running 65 for 17 miles it held an 11* difference. Turns out that my aftermarket warranty is gonna pay to fix it. Gionna do a bulletproof egr cooler and whAtnot while the mechanic is in there.
Mine stayed at about 11-13 degrees for around 2 years. It was the second oil cooler. When the HPOP went out I changed the oil cooler again and it runs around 6-8 degrees now. If the HPOP had not gone out, I had decided not to change the oil cooler until it constantly ran 15 or higher. By the way, when it went out the first time, before I had gauges, the receipt from Ford said it was running 39 degrees above the coolant.
