Hey Guys, I've got an 05 6L diesel. About 80k miles. Warranty has expired. I've only got 2 more payments on it.. !! Yahoo!

Besides normal items (oil, trans, dif, coolant, fuel filter, air filter etc) are there any other items I should be looking at in the near and/or distant future to get as much life out of the truck as possible?

Its already had the high pressure fuel rail replaced by the dealer, as well as a couple of injectors.

Thanks for the help!

Fuel Filters every 10k. I know you already listed that, but I want to stress how important it is. Same with oil changes.
  • Run a fuel additive, like Diesel Kleen.
  • Pull your EGR valve and inspect. Clean if needed, and pull it and inspect every time you change fuel filters.
  • Install an engine monitor, like the Insight or the ScangageII. You want to at least monitor coolant temp and oil temp, and compare the difference. Should be less than 15°F.
  • Install a coolant bypass filter.
  • Test your coolant nitrite stength every year.
  • Change your batteries (pair) every 3 years. Change them before they need it, not after.
Become a regular in the 6.0 diesel forum. You will learn much, much more.

Hey Bill, you've pointed out some things that I realized I don't know enough about, and this seems like a good place to ask:

Why should the temps be close? And why is that important? What should you do it the temps are more that 15* different?

Is testing worth it, or is just draining and replacing the coolant a good idea? (Ignoring the cost, obviously replacing it is significantly more expensive) I guess is nitrite strength the only determining factor, or is 3 years enough time to build up some gunk in the coolant that you'd be better off flushing out?

If there is a large difference between coolant temp and oil temp, that indicates that your oil cooler is probably plugged up. The way it works is, coolant flows first through your oil cooler, and then through your EGR cooler. If the coolant passages in the oil cooler are plugged, coolant does not reach the EGR cooler with sufficient flow. Then the EGR gasses at 1,200 degrees or more will overheat the EGR cooler and cause it to fail, or possibly just flash boil the coolant and cause puking.

Replacing the EGR cooler and rebuilding the oil cooler are nearly inevitable on these engines some time before 100k miles. The coolant filter can help prevent the oil cooler from clogging - we hope.

You could just flush it, but to do it right is a rather big job. Cost might be $60-$80 which isn't too bad, but it can be a several hour job to do it right. Common wisdom says to change the coolant every 50k miles, and test the nitrites in between.

Thank you for all that!! Exactly what I was looking for.

Is there a vendor that supports this forum that I can buy an engine monitor from?

Thanks again!

On the low priced end you can find the ScangaugeII at Autozone for less than $150. The Edge Insight is about $300, plus $80 for an optional EGT probe. Several of the sponsors offer that. Personally I just bought mine at Amazon.com. Be aware that Edge now has the Insight CTS, which has really nice color graphics at slightly higher cost. It is the wave of the future, but reports here are that it is not quite ready for prime time, and they seem to be adding important features over time that are already available in the older model. If I had to buy one today it would still be the older model.

Ordered that scangauge. Thanks.

Man, there sure is a lot of hate out there on the 6.0L making it past 100k miles...

Got me worried, so I got a quote from FordESP for an extended warranty. Really not bad on price.

Do you think that coolant bypass filter would void an ext waran?

We have heard of someone getting hassled over it, but I think it is pretty rare. And a heck of a lot of us have them. I think it is a pretty safe mod.

Read through that EGR cleaning thread. One guy says not to use brake clean on the EGR. Is that correct? If not, what to use? Also, ok to re-use the gaskets?

Use Carb clean on EGR. If you don't tear gaskets you can reuse them. I replace them anyway to be safe.

That was pretty dirty, and looked to me like it was probably leaking. But it was nice and dry carbon, which is very good news.

So, got the scangauge in and programmed. Oil Temp hovers around 200-210, water temp ranges 198-205.

I love this thing! Thanks!

Just need to get the coolant by-pass filter next.
