351w or 351M

So I have some one wanting to trade my 351w for there 351M that has less than 1000 miles, my only question is that, which ones better are motor mounts the same? Can my t18 transmission bolt up to it? If not is there an adapter? And would be it cheaper to get parts for a 351w or 351M..just want to get all my ducks in a row before seal the deal

Don't do it.

W will out perform M in every way. The only way to make a good 351M is to turn it into a 400 with good compression Pistons. Otherwise, the 351M is a real dog.

It won't bolt up to your motor mounts or your bellhousing. It uses the 429/460 bell pattern.

351m/400 are the engines Ford hit the hardest with emissions equipment. It was their most selling engine family and they had to so as to meet Federal Emission average standards. We can thank the Feds for the underpowered 351M/400.

Do you recall the head cracking problem that affected 1975/79 351M/400?

These heads usually cracked after the 2 year/24,000 mile warranty had expired, p!ssing off 1000's of owners.

700 bucks (a lotta money back then) to replace the heads including parts/labor and a core charge. We used GPD heads since they came with the valves, some were new, some remanufactured.

You also have to ask yourself why someone with a thousand mile 351M would want to trade you for your 351W?

If they were satisfied with the 351M, with only 1,000 miles on it, they wouldn't want to be trading it for your 351W.

Sounds like they are trying to unload their headache on you.

The thing is, the 351W has been swapped into the OP's truck, since it wasn't available in F150/350's and Bronco's until 1981.

OP's "About Me" profile sez 1967 F150. 'Course the F150 wasn't introduced until 1975. The only V8 available in 1967 F100/350's was the 352 2V

No, I don't. BTW, GPD was in Detroit also back then. GPD Commador. Back then I worked driver/front counter at Whitman Ford in Temperance Mi. Then counter at Franklin Park L/M in Toledo. I don't remember going through any 6049's back there. Then here in AZ at Earnhardt Ford on the front counter. So I didn't see any warranty issues. While I was at Earnhardt, during the 10 years I was there, I worked the whole gambit. Front counter, Body Shop counter a few times, Back counter a few times, then finally Wholesale phones like I'm still doing here at Berge. The Body Shop manager and the Service managers both wanted me. I was like a ping pong ball there for a while.

Here in LA LA Land, GPD (Genuine Parts Distributors) was once owned by Tomadur Engine. They were located near the smelly Farmer John meat packing plant in Vernon.

Dunno who owns it to today, but they're located about 5 miles NE of my residencia in the City of Industry....where the air doesn't smell like a slaughterhouse.

Reading up on 351m-400 builds people found that the cams were retarded like 4 degrees. This making them dogs. I had a 400 that would smoke 35 inch Bf G.all terrain tires. Trick is to use a degree wheel to set cam.

The cam is just one part of it. Compression was low, exhaust was restrictive, ignition timing was low, carb was small. You can make a 400hp 400 with the right pieces. Just like any other motor. But the 351M is pretty much doomed in the performance realm.
