I have a 1994 F150 Flareside manual shift, 6 cylinder in exceptionally good condition with +230K miles on it.
I anticipate the engine will not last much longer. I am contemplating having a crate motor dropped into it, if/when needed. Would one of the newer eco-boost engines bolt up ?
Many thanks for all your input. I love my truck but not $$,$$$ much.
Got a rattle in bearings when it first starts....... hopefully it'll last another 250K.

You may have a cheap oil filter that doesn't have a good anti drain back valve. Try a Napa, Wix, Hastings, K&N or ??? I've seen many Fords have that rattle eliminated by changing to another brand filter.
Hahaha, my 95 f150 truck does the exact same thing. It has 216K on the engine as of now. Funny thing though-Fram is the only oil filter that DOESNT
cause a bearing rattle on start up. Believe me, I have tried every other filter brand imaginable, (including motorcraft filters from ford) but the FRAM PH8A is the only one that I don't hear a bearing rattle at start up. I am still on the fence about the whole FRAM thing anyways. I've used them for years and haven't had any trouble. Not saying they're the best filter by any means, just saying I've never had any trouble. As long as you change the oil every 3000 it shouldn't be an issue.

I put 200,000 Miles on my old 72 F250 Camper Special and almost exclusively used the Fram PH8A. My truck had a 360 and I only changed the oil every spring and fall. I have no idea how many miles I had between oil changes. Having said that, today I wouldn't use a Fram unless I HAD to change the oil and nothing else was available.
If you can live with the rattle, then keep on driving it! It's been said, but those 300 sixes are extremely durable.
If the engine does need replacement, go with another one. Remans are ~$1500 to ? not sure what a Jasper is worth or other high end. Installation (if you don't want to do it yourself) is probably worth $600 maybe? Less if you can find a good mech that does stuff on the side (many do).
