Picked up a 1978 300 and am going to do a complete re-build on the motor. Here is the thing. It is not going in a truck. It is going into a 1948 Bombardier Snow Bus with a C6. I would like to give it a little more HP, but keep it in the lower RPM range for the best torque. I would like to use a RV type cam and a 2 barrel carb. Is there a 2 barrel intake out there that I can use with my stock exhaust manifold and what cam should I spec? I would like to keep the stock exhaust manifold to get the carburetor heat and the engine bay is very tight for headers.
Check Clifford or Offenhauser performance. They both offer good 300 inline 6 options. I believe I have seen 2 barrel manifolds (can't remember where) but generally the 4 barrel is more popular. If you can get a small 4 barrel with vacuum secondaries, and a decent manifold, you will get the best mileage and power possible out of it. It's been awhile, but last time I was reading about this, the general consensus was like a 490 cfm holly (or something similar) was best for that engine. Also, look in to EFI 300 exhaust mainfolds. Basically factory compact headers, don't take up much space, and provide for true duel exhaust. Check out some threads here, and on sites like "the hamb". The 6 cylinder hotrod is coming back in popularity, so there is more info every day about building these motors.
