7.3 p1316 code and it's not uvch

Hey gents. I'm running a 2000 f250 7.3. The truck has been stumbling for the last two years intermittently. I did the 50 cent mod last fall to the uvch's. Changed CPS, idm, air flow sensor. This last week it finally threw the p1316 code so I have something to go off of. Trucks falling on its face so I parked it. Tore it down lastnight. Ohm tested all the injectors lastnight cold and all read around 3ohms. Tested the uvch's and continuity looks good on both sides. Tested them through the valve cover seal, tested fine. Tested them through the first harness and fine. All I have left to check is all the way to the idm. Still no luck finding the problem.
Any suggestions?

Well I finished testing the remaining harness to the idm and all checks out. Ran a buzz test and all injectors check out as well. I'm planning on replacing uvch's anyway as well as vc gaskets considering they are original to the truck going on 15 yrs old and putting everything back together. Still open for suggestions. Only thing that makes any sence to me considering it's an idm p1316 code is to replace injectors due to possible solenoid failure. Is it possible there is failures occurring when the truck is hot? All my testing has been with the engine cold.

Moved to 1999 - 2003 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel technical forum. You didn't seem to be getting any help in the Super Duty technical forum.

Good luck and welcome to FTE!

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1316 INDICATES THAT CODES ARE STORED IN THE IDM
Possible causes:
Injector(s) or circuit(s)
Open or shorted IDM enable circuit
Open/short in EF circuit
Open/short in FDCS circuit
IDM relay
IDM powering circuits
IDM
PCM
Check for other codes.
Key on, engine off.
Perform KOEO On-Demand Self Test.
P1316 OR P1670, CHECK FOR AN INTERMITTENT OPEN CIRCUIT
Key off.
Install breakout box, leave PCM disconnected.
Disconnect IDM.
Check for intermittent open in the following circuits:
Measure resistance on (FDCS) Circuit 821 (BR/O) between IDM connector Pin 17
and PCM Test Pin 95.
Measure resistance on (EF) Circuit 818 (GY/W) between IDM connector Pin 4 and
PCM Test Pin 48.
Grasp the harness close to the IDM connector. Wiggle, shake the harness while working
your way back to the PCM, while looking for a spike on the DVOM.
Description The IDM provides the EF output signal to the PCM to confirm that proper timing/duration of fuel delivery command signal (FDCS) was received. Additionally, the EF signal is used to send diagnostics of the IDM and injectors (electrical) to the PCM.
DTC Description
P1668 = PCM-IDM diagnostic communication error
P1670 = Electronic feedback signal not detected
P1316 = Indicates that IDM DTCs are stored within the IDM
DTC P1668 and P1670 indicates that a communication error has occurred between the
PCM and the IDM.
Possible causes:
Open fuse
IDM relay
Open or shorted IDM enable circuit
Open/short in EF circuit
Open/short in FDCS circuit
IDM powering circuits
PCM
Check for other codes.
Key on, engine off.
Perform KOEO On-Demand Self Test and retrieve Continuous DTCs.
CHECK CIRCUIT 818 (GY/W) FOR OPEN
Install breakout box; leave PCM disconnected.
Disconnect the IDM harness connector.
Measure resistance on Circuit 818 (GY/W) between PCM Test Pin 48 and IDM harness
connector Pin 4.
Key on, engine off. Measure for voltage on Circuit 818 (GY/W) between PCM Test Pin 48 and battery ground.
Turn ignition switch to OFF. Measure resistance on Circuit 359 (GY/R) between PCM Test Pin 91 and IDM connector
Pin 2.
CHECK IDM POWER
PCM connected, IDM disconnected.
Key on, engine off. Measure voltage between IDM connector Pin 14 and battery ground.
CHECK IDM GROUND
Key off. Measure resistance between IDM connector Pin 26 and battery ground.
MEASURE FREQUENCY ON THE EF LINE
Connect PCM to breakout box.
IDM connected to harness.
Set up NGS Scan tool as follows:
Connect NGS Tester to the DLC
Connect test probe between NGS common and breakout box Pin 77 (ground).
Connect second test probe between NGS signal and breakout box Pin 48 (EF line).
Select VEHICLE and ENGINE
Select DIGITAL MEASUREMENT SYSTEM
Change level to 4 VOLT DC
Press the link button to choose a PID
Select PID/DATA MONITOR
Select RPM PID
Press START
Key on, engine running.
Measure frequency at 3 different RPMs.
rpm Frequency (Hz)
1000 66
2000 133
3000 200

It's possible you have an intermittent short, a loose connector, or even a solenoid issue.

Probably not a soleniod issue since those aren't often intermittent and they give small indications (1/2 ohm off or more from the others) when checked with a meter.

Chaffed wires and loose connectors just act up when they feel like it, so they're much harder to catch with a meter. Be sure to wiggle everything you can get your hands on if testing things with an ohm meter.

So we continued to ohm out the wiring from the idm to the injectors, twisting and wiggling wires more than they would ever would under driving conditions and still no red flags. I ordered new uvch's and vc gaskets from ford and will be installing them Tuesday night. Then we will see how she like her new wires. If problems persist, I will start running the following test previously recommended. Thanks everyone for the help. FTE is definitely an amazing site!

Sorry it's been a while since I've been on here. Well I have the 2000 f250 7.3 with 180xxx miles. I have a p1316 code that continues to stick around and a random stumble/stutter I cant seem to solve. Even though ohm tests didn't show any problems i tore the valve covers off last fall and did the 50cent trick. Since that didn't solve it I replaced the idm. Now within the last month I have replaced under valve cover harnesses, uvc gaskets, cam position sensor, 50 cent trick on new harnesses, and the new IDM before I replaced uvch's. Ran a buzz test and then a contribution test and it shows 1,3,5,7 injectors are still high to the low side open. So lost. Any help?? Could I have damaged the new idm due to the old uvch's?

So it turned out my p1316 code did turn out to be either bad uvch's or idm. For those trying to solve this issue I went through two idms due to spikes/ surges damaging my first idm replacement before I replaced the uvch's. Summary: I replaced idm first. It didn't fix the problem. Then I replaced the uvch's. Problem persisted the same as it was. Then I replaced idm again. Solved the shutdown problem. Still have an intermittent stutter that I've had now for three years. Looks like it's time for injectors. Any advice still appreciated!

You can buy solenoids alone. Even with that, it's entirely possible an injector is causing your problem.

What are your goals for the truck? Race vehicle, daily driver, or tow monster?
