I have a 99 350 drw. I was coming up from n. Carolina and I noticed I keep shooting rear end oil out the vent hose... I installed a new b&w hitch on my truck and she pulls upward of 28k # on my trips.she has ran perfectly for years. I keep very good maintenance on her. I noticed after looking at the leak that the hitch with all the weight from the trailer would come down and smack the pumpkin housing... There are no leaks from any of the seals and runs at a standard of 150 to 160°f. The reason it would hit the rear end housing is because I had to take off the airbag suspension to compensate for the hitch. I will be reinstalling a new set but have to figure out the rear end first. The hitch came down so hard once it cut the 2 wires to my vss in half. I fixed the wires and all so my abs light is out but it still shoots out oil from the vent hose and quite a lot at that... Its getting expensive to keep filling it up.... Any knowledge as to what would make this happen with no visible damage or wear on the magnetic plug would be appreciated??? I need some help guys... The rear end is the Dana 80...
Well something is pushing it out. I wonder if somethings floppin around in the pumpkin (more than normal) aerating the hell out of the juice causing a volume displacement? Next step is to pull the cover and inspect. You said there was some damage and the 5th wheel(Ill assume) came down on the housing hard so thats likely the root cause. There could be damage to the case disrupting the engineered oil flow circulation causing aeration?
Are you sure however your reading the axle temp is accurate? 28K is a bunch of weight IMO for that axle.
Yes about the temp... I have been shooting it with the temp gun on every stop I've made... I have the Axel on jack stands at the moment and put it in drive and the wheels on the passenger side have a wave in the rotation... I'm wondering if a bent Axel could be causing the blow back??? The housing itself is fine as far as I can tell... But as I said before I'm lost when it comes to the innards of the unit itself...
Check the vent line for blockage. I know it doesn't make sense if it was blocked then it wouldn't leak right... but if its obstructed just enough it could be causing pressure to build then it releases when it over comes the blockage then repeats blowin out fluid. Thats the only other thing I can think of.
I would remove and replace the vent line, and run it up high (and vertically) so that a small burp of oil has a chance to run back into the diff. before making it to the end of the tube. I presume there is no chance of water in the diff?
You might take the truck to a differential specialist for his opinion on the bent axle, and ask him about the fluid blowout, too. There are a ton of those axles in service, so someone must know.
