I'm sure this question has been asked a hundred times but I can't find the thread. I looking to buy a 2006-2012 F-250 4x4 preferably with a crew cab, what engine should I be looking for? Most reliable?? and which engine should I stay away from? I won't be doing any towing or plowing. Thanks in advance!!
If you don't mind the less than stellar fuel economy, I'd try to find one with the 6.8V10. I have a 2010 V10 F350. Love that truck and the engines have an excellent track record. They are difficult to find though, so patience may be required.
Another vote for V10 here. No issues on the 2008 Job2-2010 motors. The earlier gassers (V10/V8) can have difficulty with 2 piece spark plugs breaking in the heads, which isn't the end of the world but is an issue. I haven't heard one bad thing about the 6.2 motors. And with the right gearing it is a beast. The 5.4 is another option and may be a little easier to find than the V10.
The diesels have a bad reputation but some seem to enjoy them.
I was there that day. I was thoroughly impressed with silverbullets truck. The video does that hill and the amount of weight in the trailer no justice. In the beginning you can hear the tires break loose going up hill from a dead stop with 16k on the hitch.
My 5.4 is probably the most reliable engine I've owned, and it's on it's 17th year with over a quarter million miles. That said, it can handle towing, but I wouldn't want to constantly tow heavy with it. It'll tow anything I want, but the more weight I drag, the longer it takes to get up to speed. Passing with a load takes a lot of thinking (and seeing) ahead-- and this engine in this size of truck isn't going to win any drag races with an empty bed and no trailer.
I haven't had the opportunity to drive my Excursion with the V10 yet, but I've read the comments here for years (I'm still putting it back together). They seem to be just as reliable as mine. My dad's truck has the 7.3 and it's been pretty reliable as well.
I can't offer an opinion on anything except the first generation of engines, as I'm not familiar with the rest...
I love my 7.3 and it's got over 440k trouble free miles on it but for someone just wanting to get in, put it in drive not worry about tearing anything up I would recommend a gasser.
