So it is really nagging me in the back of my mind. I've got 230k on the girl. Looking at a lot of towing miles this year. I love the Ex and have recently done a lift and got her looking the way I want. Looking for opinions on rebuilding, reman swap or trading/selling for newer truck. What have you all done at this point of your ex's life. I have done a little research on 3v and torque shift and that doesn't look to easy. Any thoughts?
It really depends on your wallet, I loved my previous ex 2002 V10. I sold her at 238k miles with zero issues because I had the diesel itch. I looked for a late build 05' with low miles, never looked back although I do miss the old gal once in awhile.
Reman V10s are relatively cheap. I was considering diesel, but the $ math didn't justify the change. These V10s are gas hogs but are strong motors. I would do a fresh 2v with all the recommended mods from FTE and run it for 250,000 more miles. That's the route I'm looking at anyway....
Yeah, that 3V V-10 and Torqshift would be an awesome swap but like you said, very far from easy.......
Is the motor/drivetrain giving you any problems currently or dropping hints that it is getting tired? Plenty of these 2V V-10 running around with higher miles on them.
With that recent lift (and I assume taller tires) have you looked into a gear change to keep the motor in the sweet spot for those towing miles? Gears that give an effective ratio (taking the taller tires into account) of 4.30 to 4.75-ish will make life easier on the motor/drivetrain. My setup has an effective ratio of 4.39 (as well as headers and 5Star tunes) and it can maintain 70+ MPH climbing long mountain grades in OD while pulling our 11,000lb TT, deeper gears are a great match for the V-10!
I have been thinking hard about gears too. Last trip to Utah from Iowa I ended up pulling the Rockies in first gear at 3500rpm. Pulling my Bronco and trailer plus equipment right at 10,000 lbs. Unfortunately I have spent every minute getting the bronco ready for moab. When I get back from this first trip the Ex will get addressed. Gears might be great place to start
