I have had 2 v10 trucks. The first one had over 200,000 on it when I sold it (to a guy that drives it every day) and the other one was a newer one with 60,000 some on it. Got a neighbor with a 99 v10 truck with 140k on it, an no issues. The v10 is a darn good motor, and will tow a load nicely, very comparable to a diesel, other than fuel economy. If you were gonna buy a v10 truck and not put a lot of tow miles on it, go for it. A very wise and economical decision. If you are going to tow a LOT of miles (I run close to 100k a year) you may want to consider a diesel. There are a lot of arguments about v10 vs diesel, mostly based on jock strap size......
I know this wasn't what you asked, and I could be passing along incorrect info, but I read on this forum, taken from flateratetechs.com, that the modulars, i.e., V10 was engineered as a 450,000 mile engine with a 19% exception rate (19% should have more or less miles???)
293,000+ on my 01. Slight piston slap now when cold. Used to get 14.5 mpg (empty, 80% highway, 20% city driving) Since about 200,000 miles it dropped to about 12.5-14 mpg. But mileage is not what we buy these trucks are made for... I still tow my 7K, 32ft TT in the mountains with no problems.
i have complete confidence in this engine, would leave for a road trip tomorrow if necessary...
Check the service records or make sure the engine wasn't sludged from lack of maintenance. These babies like CLEAN oil!
