Hello All, I am wanting to do a compression and leak down test on my '99. I am in the process of taking my intake manifold off and putting new gaskets on and figure I better do these tests now in case I need to tear the motor further apart and do the cylinder head gaskets- would stink to put it all back together and it still smoke.
My question is this: for the compression test I will obviously need to turn the engine over. I have my coils out and injectors disconnected in preparation to pull the intake. Do I need to do anything else other than pull the spark plug and crank it?
I believe you need to give each cylinder a little squirt of oil for the rings to seal properly. Otherwise you might get a false negative.
That's a good point, might not be a bad idea to do that, especially since it's day for past week. Do i just squirt some down on the piston when it's at TDC and it will run where it needs to and do I need to wait a few minutes for it to flow to where it needs to go? Thanks!
I normally just give each cylinder a couple of squirts right before I install the gauge and just crank it over a few times for the reading, to be sure the oil gets dispersed evenly.
Ok, so since I have a bad head gasket as a culprit here do you think that I should squirt some oil down the spark plug hole, crank it a few times, thread the compression tester into spark plug hole, see what the compression is and then put it on TDC compression stroke and do the leakdown test then? I was planning on pulling the valve covers to see when both valves are closed and put it on TDC.
