I'm getting ready to test the compression on my 1999 f150 5.4 350k miles. It ran like crap when I bought it with no power at all. I did a bunch of preliminary testing, COP testing, voltage tests, sensor checking, took off the intake manifold to reseal it for possible leaks, checked all the vacuum lines, etc.
So now the engine has no intake manifold on or valve covers. I noticed that the passenger side timing chain is really loose so that will create some of my problems if it jumped time. My question is can I still run the compression test this way? No intake and probably out of time.
Compression test ok because you normally open the throttle to do that test.
The chain tensioners are hydraulic operated from system oil pressure.
During compression testing they would not have any tension from that source by just cranking the motor on battery..
All you want is to fill the cylinders with enough air to measure the cylinder static compression pressure the same on way all cylinders.
Good luck..
