Adding keypad to drivers door?

I have a 2012 F150 XLT
Truck didn't come with the keypad however in the owner's manual there is a card with the 5 digit keyless entry code. My question is would the truck already be programmed for the keypad and all I would have to do is order the ford part. I called the dealer and all they want to do is sell me a keypad for retail and charge me $150.00 to program it.

Did anyone else have the card in their owners manual without the keypad?

thanks in advance for reading

John

You will need to get the truck programmed for the key pad to work.

It's not like it was in the old days...when I added a key pad to my 06 XLT and it was plug and play.

even with the 5 digit key card in the glove box? that's what has me stumped.

Yup, if it doesn't come from the factory with a (door handle) key pad it has to be programmed for one to work... the only exception it is one of those stick on key pads that the dealer can add on.

For what it's worth....I never use my keypad and doubt I ever will start. It makes no sense no me.

I had a Ford dealer add a keypad to my daughter's 2010 Focus. The car has keyless entry but no pad as stated above. Even though the car came with a code, the keypad came with it's own. The person who mounted it for was able to program it with several ignition key turns and something else. I'm sure this has changed since 2010.

The thing that bothers me is I don't like the looks of the Ford aftermarket part.

I got it so I can retrieve my keys if ever locked out. Never use it otherwise.

Will I lock myself out? Probably not. Will my wife lock us out? Oh, ya.

I always used the keypad on my various Explorers, especially when I'm going somewhere in the summer and didn't want to either 1. walk around with a big pile of keys in my pocket all day (like at Six Flags or something) or 2. don't want to chance losing them (like at a concert)

I'd add the keypad to my '10 but as Tim says- I can not STAND how crappy that aftermarket stick on keypad looks. Totally amateur.

I love the convenience of having the keypad. Do I use it regularly? No, but it's worth the piece of mind to have it should I ever lock my keys in the truck or like PIJoe said, not want to carry my keys around all day.

There are two ways to add a keypad.

1. If you have a remote that has lock and unlock, you can by the addon keypad. You program it just like another remote using the key in the ignition method that the manual has. This keypad will come with it's own master code. No need to go to a dealer to get programming completed.

2. If you have a remote that has the lock and unlock, you can add a factory door handle with key pad. You have to get the code off your computer, but in this case you already have the code. Once the new keypad is installed, you have to take it too a dealer to get the computer to have the keypad enabled. The master code will match the computer (or card that came with your vehicle).

If you didn't have the code already, you can get it off the computer itself which is in the passenger right side kick panel.
