A friend of mine had something similar happen only he caught it before they finished filling the tank. They figured out if you take the rear filter off and cycle the key the lift pump empties the tank out in a hurry. Sounded like a reasonable idea.

Fuel

Check and change you fuel filter often right now. If you see metal in the filter, you have a issues. Double up on your fuel treatment, for a couple of tanks.

If you have a issues some insurance company will cover the repair.

Haha yea I would buy a lottery ticket but I'm pretty sure I used all my luck up already. Really hopefull that we caught it in time, we got around 12-16oz of diesel out of the water/fuel separator before it was straight gas and we purged all the lines till it was straight diesel before we attempted to start it. we still had 520 miles to go till home and she ran great the whole way but I'm keeping an eye on things

Changed the all the fuel filter, oil and filter when I got up this morning. I had to work afternoon so I didn't get to cut it open but I'm going to.

This is what handles I was talking about, the D is like a handle and it's connected to that little plug looking thing. What are these for? There's two of them on the bottom of the tank

Pretty sure they are plugs in the plastic shield that protects the fuel tank. You pull those out and it will drain any water/crud that is built up in there before you drop the tank. I will take a look at mine a little later to confirm..

At half a mile gasoline made it to the hpfp. I agree with senix, bust open the engine and dfcm filters now that it has been driven, look inside the pleats and see if you find metal. If you do, best not to drive it.
I use a punch to carefully split open the seem on that sealed filter.
Also, make sure your tank is 100% back in place and sealed. Water seeping in there wouldn't be good either.

I thought those handles were for assembly as well. I didn't think it was a "plug" that could be removed and replaced. Something to use to hang up the fuel tanks on a line for a tech to grab and then use to help put the tank on the truck. I could be wrong as well...

I broke open the filter this morning, opened the pleats up and didn't see any metal of any kind. Even went as far as taking the magnifying glass to look. I'm going to run it awhile and change them out again. When we pulled the sending unit out it was all smooth on the inside and that's what had me curious as to what they where for. I though maybe to handle the tank during assembly but wasn't sure

With my truck, two things that I always check and double check.

I am the only person that fills my tank. When filling, I check and double check that diesel is the only thing going in the tank. I don't pull the little handle until I am certain that the correct fuel is going into the tank. For me, I worry when filling up my wife's car. I'm more likely to put Diesel into her car than Gas into my truck. I never use the shared pumps. All pumps where I fuel up are diesel only.
When filling my DEF tank, I never do this if I am in a hurry. Take my time and insure DEF is not going into the fuel tank.
